Sampone Park – Broad St & Center St, Amsterdam, NY
The small paved and gravel lot on the corner of Broad Street and Center Street in Amsterdam, NY is the perfect lot to transform into a park for neighborhood residents. The only gathering place in this neighborhood for parents/caregivers with young children is the school, which is only available during non-school hours and sits atop a hill. The ne
xt closest playground requires crossing one of the major highways into the city, not to mention crossing the Mohawk River. Parkitects, Inc., an Upstate NY Design and Sales Firm, has worked closely with the Sampone family and local contractors in planning this project, providing the master plan. They looked at all the details, from fencing off the perimeter, having play spots for all ages and abilities, accessible parking, picnic tables and benches, to new tree landscaping. There’s even a pathway that weaves and loops the park connecting everything and encouraging kids to discover the natural play areas and play in the grass or just ride their bike or scooters around. The back of the park has a large concrete retaining wall holding up the old railroad track that is now a paved walking path that follows an old railroad track. The local kids and artists will be able to transform this wall into a beautiful mural. The equipment by Landscape Structures’ nature-inspires play with climbing rocks, a climb and slide structure, a seesaw, a rocking spring toy area, and the OmniSpin spinner; which is an accessible merry-go-round that provides back and trunk support for the users, as well as speed control so younger children will be able ride without getting thrown off. This play area allows the families to gather in a safe, fun environment and also engages the 7 Senses: tactile, proprioceptive, vestibular, visual, auditory, motor planning and social/imaginative.
