If you are looking for something fun and easy to do with the family this weekend, bring the kids on down to the South lot of Amherst High School for the APD bike rodeo!!

There will be first responders there helping teach your kids bike safety.

Free pizza from Olde Town
Free ice cream
An obstacle course for the kids to ride through

The event will be Saturday, June 6th, from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

In the mean time, see the below photos of Amherst kids practicing bike safety by wearing their helmets. APD has teamed up with Hastee Tastee again this summer, handing out Safety Citations to those kids practicing bike safety. Those citations are good for a free ice cream cone at Hastee Tastee. The citation also enters you in a contest to win a free bike at the end of the summer.

We hope to see you there this weekend, and hope to see practicing bike safety all throughout this summer!

It has now been eight years since one of our own, Officer JR Ptacek, was shot in the line of duty while representing APD as a member of the Lorain County SWAT Team.

While that was an incredibly difficult day for our department, each year we reflect on it with gratitude because we are thankful that JR is still here with us today. We are grateful for his fellow SWAT team members who stepped in and helped save his life, and we are thankful that God watched over him and allowed him to remain with us.

Earlier this month, JR also reached a significant milestone with APD, celebrating 25 years of service with our agency. Throughout those 25 years, JR has dedicated countless hours to our department while also building a successful business, raising a family, and being an outstanding member of the community.

Congratulations on this remarkable achievement, JR. We are so thankful you are here to celebrate with us!

Now that school is out for the summer, did you know that Amherst Police Department will check your home for you if you go on vacation?

Both day and night shift officers have zones they check every shift, and within that zone we can check on your home for you if you are going to be away for awhile.

Next time you go on a trip, stop in to APD and fill out a vacation watch form for that extra added security while you’re away!

Memorial Day 2026.

Today many of our officers helped out with Amherst’s Memorial Day parade, where our community had an amazing showing, gathering to Honor our fallen heroes.

Early in the morning Amherst Fire Department had a ceremony celebrating 4 new firefighters. While we are proud of all of them, we do have a favorite. Pictured to the far left is one our own, Officer Jay Nahm, who now joins AFD to further serve this community.

What a great day it was in Amherst!

Ptl. Marusa and Det. Giardini teamed up with Lorain County Public Health, and Amherst McDonald’s, to promote safe driving habits. Customers in the drive thru were given free coupons for Burgers if they were wearing their seat belt as part of the Buckle Up For Burgers program. A few lucky customers even got to receive their food from Ptl. Marusa as he took time to help in the drive thru and spend time with the hard working crew at McDonald’s.
