Sene-Gambian Scholars Exchange Program

Sene-Gambian Scholars Exchange Program We are a cultural study and exchange program for high school students in Amherst, MA; Dakar, Senegal; and Gunjur, The Gambia.

Founded in 2008, the Sene-Gambian Scholars Exchange Program gives students at Amherst Regional High School the opportunity to learn in depth about the cultures and languages of Senegal and The Gambia, two West African countries, and share once-in-a-lifetime cultural exchanges with students from Cours de Saint Marie, a high school in Dakar, Senegal, and from Sifoe Senior Secondary School in Gunjur,

The Gambia. The program offers students the chance to both host groups from these schools and to travel to Sene-Gambia themselves for a three-week exchange experience. Join us in our mission to cultivate cross-cultural understanding in youth and build bridges across the Atlantic to last a lifetime!

In accordance with school policies, proof of Covid vaccination and masking are required. Light refreshments will be served.

The fourth cohort of Sene-Gambian Scholars has just concluded its 3+ week exchange trip to The Gambia and Senegal, after a two-year postponement due to Covid. The scholars lived with host families, visited partner schools, went on cultural field trips, and, most of all, formed friendships across borders. These six students are now ambassadors who can speak truths and challenge stereotypes about Africa. Congratulations, scholars! Your hard work paid off.

The Sene-Gambian Scholars are conducting a penny drive to raise funds for a village in Senegal that currently has no access to a copier. Please consider donating that jar of pennies taking up space on your shelf! Watch for updates about where and when you can donate:

1. There is a collection box in the high school office.
2. There will be a collection at South Congregational Church in Amherst at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 1.

You can also donate online at our GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/pennies-for-pambal?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link-tip&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet.

We're also looking for used but serviceable laptops that people in the village who don't currently have computer access could use. If you have a laptop you could donate, please send us a message.

The Sene-Gambian Scholars Exchange Program at Amherst Regional High School is trying to raise funds so that students from The Gambia who hosted them this year can come to the U.S. next spring. Some great friendships were formed during the exchange visit, but international airfare is beyond the reach of most families in the village. We're hoping that this fundraiser can pave the way for at least a few of the Gambian students to have a life-changing experience. Any help you can give will be much appreciated!
