We had our Stuff a Cruiser at Walmart in Hadley today and the community did not disappoint once again! We filled 2 pickup trucks, an Expedition and a van along with hundreds of dollars donated as well. Thank you Marcus Humber for getting this organized as well as the members of your department that helped and especially Buddy The Elf who provided lots of laughs. Thank you to the UMPD troops who came out to help including the Grinch. CSO Amherst also was on hand throughout the day helping to collect. We will be able to help a lot of people thanks to the generosity shown through places like Jessie's House, The Amherst Survival Center and the Bridge Family Resource Center (hopefully calling you all by the right name). It truly humbles me to be a part of something so big to help so many!

Our UMass Honor Guard was on hand last night at the Boston Celtics game to present The Colors. We are always honored to be part of the ceremony for The National Anthem. We've got another, closer to home opportunity coming up soon as well.

Once again officers from UMPD and Amherst PD will be "stuffing our cruisers". That's right! We'll be outside the Walmart in Hadley next Sunday December 18th to fill our cruisers with your generous donations. We're a little late this year but we're hoping that won't affect everyone's generosity so we can assist those less fortunate this Holiday season. If you're out and about in the Hadley area please stop by between 10am and 4pm to help us Stuff our Cruisers!

A fellow Sergeant from Hadley has been diagnosed with leukemia. UMPD officers and supervisors will be doing whatever we can to assist Mike and his family as they undertake this daunting and sure to be grueling battle with the monster. Mike we wish you the best and cannot wait to have you back on the streets with us after you kick butt and get better. Here's to a full and speedy recovery!

Yesterday we said goodbye to Retired Sergeant Paul Vlach after his sudden passing resulting from a short illness. Sgt. Vlach served the university for 34 years from 1976 through 2010 when he retired. He was a mentor, trainer and well respected officer and supervisor. We send his family our best, thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Rest easy sarge.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness we write to advise the passing, line of duty death, of this trooper. Taken far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and all of MSP. Rest easy. We have the watch from here.

Today we said farewell to a 36 year fixture of our department. Dispatcher Kelly Vassallo worked her final shift with us after an amazing career. Her professionalism over these years will be sorely missed. She was able to intertwine the thin gold line with the thin blue line and we will be forever grateful. Farewell is not truly accurate as she will be forever a member of the UMPD family so we will say "until we see you again". Thank you for your dedication. You will be missed!

There truly are no words for this. The sergeant was out doing his job, protecting those he swore to look after. We don't work in perfect sunny and moonlit conditions. We're out in every kind of weather.
Thank you for your service sergeant. We've got the watch from here.

We were completely blindsided by some absolutely horrendous and tragic news yesterday. We learned that one of our long time dispatchers passed away totally unexpectedly Thursday. For the sake of the families privacy I am not going to get into specifics or names. I ask you all to just say a little prayer and keep her family and friends especially and her UMPD family in your thoughts. Hug your family because nothing is guaranteed.
