On Monday, June 22nd, sidewalk repairs will begin on the southbound side of Market Street, from 38 Market Street to the rotary at 1 High Street.

Work will begin at approximately 7:00am and will continue for roughly a week and is subject to change due to weather and sidewalk conditions.

“No Parking” signs will be posted on Thursday the 18th as a reminder that cars should be moved from that location by 6:00am Monday morning (6/22). During this time, no parking signs will remain posted in the affected areas until the work is completed. Vehicles left in the spaces marked as no parking are subject to ticketing and/or towing at the owner’s expense.

Businesses and residences impacted by the construction will remain open. Those accessing those locations should exercise caution and adhere to directions from contracted workers and police details.

For the purpose of safety, all other pedestrians should utilize the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street until the work is completed.

The City of Amesbury has received its 2027 Chapter 90 apportionment of $677,509.41.

The purpose of the Chapter 90 Program is to provide municipalities with an annual funding source for infrastructure improvements to, and investments in, local transportation networks. Every municipality in the Commonwealth is allocated a portion of the total program dollars. The Chapter 90 Program allows municipalities to evaluate their unique transportation needs and goals and allocate funding dollars accordingly.

Chapter 90 funds may only be used for construction on locally owned, or accepted, roadways. Projects on private roadways or those otherwise not owned by the municipality (such as those owned by MassDOT) are not eligible for Chapter 90 funding.

Between May and July, local freshwater turtles leave ponds to lay eggs in sunny, sandy spots like yards, driveways, and roadsides. The most common freshwater turtles that we see in Amesbury are snapping turtles and painted turtles (not endangered). Many nests are on private property, so their survival depends on you!

Here is how you can help protect them:

· Give them space: Keep people and pets 15 feet away while she lays her eggs (it can take 1–3 hours).

· Do not move her: She knows exactly where she needs to go.

· Mark the spot: Once she leaves, place a traffic cone, lawn chair, or other available marker over the nest to prevent accidental stepping or mowing.

· Consider building a simple wire mesh nest protector. Make sure there is an available exit for when the turtles hatch.

· Avoid mowing over the area.

· Hold the chemicals: Avoid fertilizers or pesticides near the nest area.

· Be patient: Eggs take 60 to 90 days to hatch (usually late August through October).
