We are looking forward to seeing walkability play out in the area of the Front Runner station. In addition to the Front Runner station area, downtown American Fork has tremendous opportunity and potential to become a walkable, mixed-use area as it further redevelops.

National Realtors’ Survey Indicates Strong Interest in Walkable, Mixed-Use Neighborhoods

When people were asked to choose between a neighborhood that “has a mix of houses and stores and other businesses that are easy to walk to” versus a neighborhood that “has houses only and you have to drive to stores and other businesses,” the walkable neighborhood was preferred 60 percent to 35 percent!

As development begins to take shape around the American Fork station, and with the eventual extension of light rail into Utah County and through American Fork, ridership is likely to remain on the upswing.

As the north County area continues to grow, increased transit options are vital for both east/west and north/south movements. This study will identify corridors for options such as light rail, bus rapid transit (BRT), station areas, and fixed route bus service. Increased options for various modes of transportation/transit will ensure the area's vitality and attractiveness as new business and residents alike choose to make this area home.

Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) and UTA are partnering to look at future transit options that may be applicable in the northern part of Utah County. MAG is working to understand and develop future concepts for the north part of Utah County that can be used in the development of the nex...

Jeff Speck, in his book "In Walkable City:How Downtown Can Save America" poses an excellent observation and begs the question: have we, due to 'worshipping the twin gods of smooth traffic and ample parking, turned our downtowns into places that are easy to get to but not worth arriving at'?

"One of the great selling points we have for economic development is our trails." Well said, Commissioner Anderson.

The Murdock Canal Trail, through American Fork, is just one of many trail corridors which will ultimately provide a comprehensive non-motorized transportation network ensuring safe, convenient access to all areas of the city.

A date has been set to open the new 16-mile Murdock Canal Trail to the public, but officials are also warning that the trail is not open now.
