Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Carson and Potter counties, including the Amarillo area.

The warning is in effect until 6:15 p.m. today, September 10.

Residents in the affected areas should remain weather aware and take shelter if threatening weather approaches.

Posted Sep 10 @ 5:40 PM: Storm coverage will increase in the outlined area over the next few hours. A few storms could become severe with damaging winds and large hail. Heavy rain may also lead to flash flooding. Be sure to have multiple ways to receive warnings this evening and be prepared to take shelter!

OEM is offering a free training course from October 1 through November 21. Classes will be held Thursdays from 6–8 p.m., with an additional Saturday training on November 14 from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The course will conclude with a graduation and practical assessment on Saturday, November 21, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.

Through this academy, you’ll learn critical emergency response skills:

-Fire Safety
-Disaster Medical Operations
-Light Search and Rescue

September is National Preparedness Month.

Now is a great time to make sure you and your family are prepared for an emergency. If you already have a plan, take a few minutes to review it and make sure everything is up to date.

Don’t have a plan yet? Start with these four steps:
1. Make a Plan
Talk with your household about emergency alerts, shelter, evacuation routes, communication, and your emergency kit.
2. Know Your Needs
Consider medical needs, pets, children, disabilities, dietary needs, and other responsibilities that may affect your emergency plan.
3. Write It Down
Create a family emergency plan with important contact information, meeting places, and medical information.
4. Practice Your Plan
Review and practice your plan with your household so everyone knows what to do when an emergency happens.

Outdoor Warning Siren Test Canceled Due to Weather

The Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has canceled the monthly outdoor warning siren test scheduled for today, August 28 due to isolated showers and thunderstorms predicted in our area.

The safety of our community is our top priority, and we do not want to activate the sirens if there is a chance that they could cause alarm or confusion.

In the meantime, we encourage you to test your NOAA Weather Radio and ensure that you have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

With severe weather conditions expected to be in effect until 11:30PM CDT, here are some tips to stay safe:

-Make sure your phone is fully charged and
NOT on silent when you go to bed.
-Make sure you’re subscribed to our AMA Alert system. Keep your weather radio plugged in.
-Keep a flashlight and new batteries close by in case of power outages.
-Prepare a place in your home to shelter in case of high winds or severe weather.

The US National Weather Service Amarillo Texas has advised against travel if possible during the flood advisory. If you can’t avoid travel and you encounter flooded roads, remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Use caution while driving and avoid areas prone to flooding.

The US National Weather Service Amarillo Texas has issued at Flash Flood Warning for August 25 at 8:35PM CDT until 11:30PM CDT

The advisory affects the following areas:
Northwestern Armstrong County, Southwestern Carson County, Southeastern Potter County, Northern Randall County

Possible flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

If you encounter flooded roads, remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Use caution while driving and avoid areas prone to flooding.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for portions of Randall and Potter counties until 8:45 p.m. CDT.

Stay indoors and take shelter until the warning has expired.

The US National Weather Service Amarillo Texas has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for August 25, effective from 4:00PM CDT to 11:00PM CDT.

The Watch has been issued for the following Texas Panhandle counties:
Armstrong, Carson, Collingsworth, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Donley, Gray, Hansford, Hartley, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Moore, Ochiltree, Oldham, Potter, Randall, Roberts, Sherman, Wheeler

And the following Oklahoma counties:
Cimarron, Texas

*** AUGUST 25 AT 2:22 PM CDT*** EFFECTIVE FOR THE AMARILLO AREA
Severe thunderstorms are expected in the Amarillo area this afternoon into tonight.

Damaging winds with gusts of 60–80 mph are possible, with isolated gusts up to 85 mph. Large hail is also possible. The tornado risk is very low.

Storms could begin as early as 5 PM, with the most likely severe weather window between 5 PM and 10 PM.

Please stay weather aware and be prepared to take shelter if severe weather develops.
