Sgt McKinney is back at it! Another Citizens Academy is underway for the 2026 fall 12-week “semester”, if you will. Opening night allows for introductions and basic information regarding the SO and it’s personnel. Several good questions and great conversation was had this evening. Potter County Sheriff's Office has been made aware of another scam. This complainant received a call from a private number asking caller if they had intended on bonding out their family member. Caller responded with "no", but had they said yes, the call may have progressed further with the intent of collecting information and or making payment arrangements. Potter County Sheriff's Office is not and will not be making calls to family members asking about bonding out their friend/family member.

Updated Public Release – Third Week Publication

This week’s Potter County Jail Population Report reflects an increase in the number of inmates in Potter County custody, further highlighting the continuing challenges associated with jail overcrowding and available housing space.

The Potter County Detention Center has a maximum rated capacity of 599 inmates, but managing jail population is more complex than simply filling every available bed.

Due to previous overcrowding concerns and requirements for managing the facility’s population, we must work toward maintaining an occupancy level that provides flexibility for safe housing and inmate management.

Additionally, inmates must be housed according to classification and separation requirements. Factors such as security level, gender, medical needs, mental-health needs, and other housing requirements mean that an open bed in one area of the jail may not necessarily be available for every inmate.

With 632 inmates currently in Potter County custody and 585 currently housed in the Potter County Detention Center, these limitations continue to create significant challenges for our facility.

The issue isn’t simply how many beds a jail has, it’s whether we have enough appropriate housing space to safely manage the population in our custody.

We appreciate the continued interest and engagement of Potter County residents as we work to provide timely, accurate, and transparent information about the operation of your Detention Center.

PRLEA is a wrap! 🎓👮‍♀️👮‍♂️

Four of our Corrections Officers were sworn in as Peace Officers on August 26, 2026, and were recognized this evening as members of the 133rd Graduating Class of the Panhandle Regional Law Enforcement Academy.

Our agency is proud to honor their incredible achievement. The five-month academy process is demanding, requiring dedication, strength, resilience, and perseverance — and each of you proved you had what it takes to cross the finish line!

Congratulations to each of you! We are proud of your accomplishment and excited to see what the next chapter holds.

Now it’s on to Field Training! 🚔

Updated Public Release –
Second Week Publication

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office is releasing its second weekly update on the population of the Potter County Detention Center.

This week, the average overall jail population showed a slight decrease, while today’s daily inmate count is higher than the recent average. These fluctuations are normal as individuals are booked, released, transferred, or otherwise move through the criminal justice system.

We also want to acknowledge and address several questions raised following last week’s initial report. Our team is currently reviewing the comments and suggestions offered by the community and evaluating how we can incorporate additional information into future updates.

We appreciate the continued interest and engagement of Potter County residents as we work to provide timely, accurate, and transparent information about the operation of your Detention Center.

Update (8:07 a.m.) We received confirmation that Highland Park ISD has water at this time.

Update (6:05 a.m.) We received confirmation that Potter County Detention Center and Rick Husband International Airport have water at this time. We will update as we receive confirmation from other facilities.

Update (1:00 a.m.) Main repair was completed and crews are working to restore and pressurize the system. This process can take approximately two or more hours.

City of Amarillo crews are responding to a water main break affecting water service in the area of East HWY 60.

The break involves a 20-inch water main. Crews are currently attempting to isolate the leak to make repairs. Additional outages may occur as crews work to isolate the affected line.

Known impacts currently include:
• Highland Park area residents (RESTORED)
• Highland Park ISD (RESTORED)
• Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport
(RESTORED)
• Potter County Detention Center (RESTORED)

Repairs are currently estimated to take approximately 12–24 hours. This estimate may change as crews assess the damaged line and make repairs.

City crews are actively working to restore service. We are also coordinating with affected facilities to address immediate water needs while service is disrupted.

Good morning,

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office is beginning a new weekly update to provide greater transparency regarding our jail population, and the offenses inmates are currently being housed for. As this first report shows our facility is operating at full capacity. This is not due to those inmates being house for misdemeanor cases, but because we are holding a significant number of individuals charged with felony crimes, several of which involve violent or otherwise dangerous offenses.

We hope these updates help clarify the current situation within our jail and the challenges associated with housing individuals who must remain in custody due to the severity of their charges.
In these weekly posts, we will also include key operational details such as:
• The current percentage of jail capacity being utilized
• Our maximum housing capability
• The number of inmates who must be housed in other counties due to space limitations
