As of this afternoon we are currently monitoring two areas for storms. The first is the storms developing across Colorado. While storms are struggling now, expectations are for storms across both Colorado and Kansas to push into the Panhandles later tonight. Meanwhile across central and east, a surface feature along the edge of the Caprock is building clouds across the Central and Eastern Panhandles. This activity is struggling now, but could lead to some more southerly storms over the next couple of hours.

Uncertainty exists regarding how far west and how late overnight the severe threat will extend, but confidence is relatively higher across the east-northeast Panhandles.

Confidence in storms developing is lower further south across the TX Panhandle, but could easily be severe if they form.

☀️⛈️ Sunday Outlook: Hot Temperatures & Severe Storm Risks ⛈️☀️

Multiple potential hazards are expected across the Panhandles Sunday. We are tracking both dangerously high temperatures and a continued risk for severe weather.

Take a look at the attached graphics for details:

Heat: Triple-digit heat spreads across the area, including 103°F in Amarillo and 104°F in Borger. Palo Duro Canyon will reach a dangerous 107°F. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities to prevent heat illness!

Storm Threat: Overall coverage will remain low with a 10-30 percent chance for rain across the area favoring the eastern Panhandles. More storms are expected north into Kansas and east into Oklahoma. That said, a severe storm risk continues, with most of the area under a Level 1 risk and the far northeast Panhandles at a Level 2 risk. Main threats include large hail and damaging wind gusts. The tornado risk remains very low.

What to do:
Stay hydrated, stay cool, and monitor local watches and warnings. Be fully prepared to take shelter if severe storms approach your area!

The Panhandles will be on the southern end of a large severe thunderstorm threat area across the central plains on Saturday. The greatest threat for severe storms will be across the Oklahoma Panhandle where rain chances range from 30 to 50 percent. Thunderstorms will decrease to more isolated coverage with just 10-30 percent chances further south towards I-40. Initially supercells will be possible with very large hail around 2 inch in diameter possible. An isolated tornado can not be rule out mainly in northern portions of the Panhandles. Storms will transition to more of a severe wind and flood threat later in the evening.

There will be recurring chances for storms most days next week, peaking around mid week. Some details will need to come into better focus as we get closer, but we'll monitor strong/severe storm potential along with where rain chances are locally higher each day.
