Sooner or later, the empty cottage that once stood on a sandy coastline was felled when the bay's frozen temperatures forced the pilings out of the bottomland, taking the cottage with it into the bay's frigid waters. The cottage once stood high on stilts and since 2024, it had been surrounded by wat...

💞Happy World Wetlands Day!

Today, we celebrate the incredible, hardworking ecosystems that are vital to Florida's health.

📍Here in Sarasota, we're lucky to have stunning examples like the Celery Fields and Red Bug Slough. These aren't just beautiful parks, they are nature’s powerhouses.

🌎Wetlands act as natural sponges, absorbing floodwaters, and as kidneys, filtering pollutants to clean our water before it reaches the bay. They are also critical habitats for countless birds and wildlife.

Protecting them is a role we all share 💪

Stewardship can start with simple actions:

🏠At home: Wash your car on the lawn instead of the driveway. This allows the ground to absorb runoff and filter it naturally. And make sure your irrigation is watering the lawn, and not the driveway.

🏠🏠In your neighborhood: Get to know your local watershed and stay informed on land-use decisions that affect it. Be the eyes and ears for our environment by reporting issues like broken pipes or illegal dumping.

Every action, big or small, helps protect these essential resources for generations to come.
