Street Department (City of Alton) – Street Repair (resurfacing / milling)



The City of Alton (Street Department) will have Central Ave closed to thru-traffic (from Union St to Elliott St) for milling beginning Tuesday, June 2, 2026 – (THE FOLLOWING Friday) June 12, 2026 (8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. each day) (weather permitting). The road will re-open as soon as work is complete.



Flaggers will be present; on-site to direct traffic. Residents will have access to their homes and business will remain open. Thru-traffic is encouraged to avoid this area whenever possible and use alternate routes. Detour signs will be in place and signs posted prior to traffic pattern changes on side streets.



As always, motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during these restrictions/closures. PURPOSE OF CLOSURE: Burns & Gillihan (contractors for City of Alton) – Street Repair

Contractors for The City of Alton (Street Department) will have Madison Ave closed to thru-traffic (from Belle St to Gesche St) for Street Repair beginning: Tuesday, June 2, 2026 (8:00 a.m.) (weather permitting). The road will re-open as soon as work is complete. Work is expected to last six (6) days thru Monday, June 8th, 2026.

Detour signs will be in place and signs posted prior to traffic pattern changes on side streets.

As always, motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes during these restrictions/closures. The Alton Police Department has received several concerns and complaints from neighbors and Park Commissioners regarding activity occurring in City parks. In response, officers will be increasing enforcement of specific City ordinances to help keep our parks safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone.

The following ordinances will be strictly enforced:

• Dumping or leaving trash, garbage, ashes, or refuse in parks outside of designated receptacles. (6-7-1F)

• Gambling or the use of gambling devices in parks and recreation areas. (6-7-1L)

• Being present in parks after hours. Parks are open from sunrise to sunset unless a City-sponsored activity is taking place. (6-7-1T)

• Dogs are prohibited in Hellrung Park and James H. Killion Park at Salu unless the animal is a trained service dog assisting a person with a disability. (6-7-1BB)

We encourage everyone to enjoy our parks responsibly and respectfully. These ordinances are in place to protect the quality of life for residents and visitors and to ensure our parks remain welcoming spaces for families and the community.

Alton Public Works has scheduled sidewalk maintenance work on East Broadway to begin Monday morning May 18, 2026. Work will consist of removing sidewalk trip hazards on both sides of Broadway from Piasa Street to Henry Street and is expected to be completed by Thursday May 21, weather permitting. There may be temporary closures of short sections of sidewalk at times but all businesses will remain accessible. Pedestrians should not enter work zones and please give workers plenty of room to work.

• If your trash bill shows a negative balance (for example, -$125.00), that means you’ve overpaid and have a credit on your account.

• Many residents have accidentally set up automatic bill pay incorrectly and are paying too often (monthly instead of every two months).
