Teague Garden Update from Mrs. Hawkins:
Stopped by school the past two days. We had so much trouble getting anything to grow and produce anything this year. I think the plants liked the new soil thanks to Diane Pinke Wishart and Peggy Leis! And maybe they like the quieter days…. And the rain. In just one week we had big changes!!!
We have so many tomato plants! 🍅 I need to find at least 8 more tomato cages! If you know anyone getting rid of some let me know ASAP.
Our peas🫛 are growing and I am working on getting taller bamboo to make a tee p*e. AND We have several green peppers! 🫑 Our collards look great and so do the brussell sprouts (but we don’t actually have any brussel sprouts)
My loufas finally got big enough to grab the fence- hoping to also find a bit of fencing to keep the lawn guys from destroying them. We have also created a blueberry patch- also need some fencing there to keep lawn guys out- they just mow over everything or w**d eat it- like they can’t see it is a garden and they apparently don’t know much about plants.
Yesterday I worked with our STEAM camp kids planting seeds in some of our shady areas that need some love. Hopefully they will be sprouting and blooming by the time they return in August- it gives our incoming 6th graders a sense of ownership when they see what a difference they already made to their new school.
During the school year the kids are also learning how to build minor projects and use tbe power tools that Home Depot left when they did the grant at pur school - they reattach the beds together when they come apart and our latest little build was a trellis out of heat treated pallets
I am hoping this school year we can work on irrigation and running hoses through PVC pipe to our beds (Lined with soaker hoses) so the lawn crew stops running over my hoses and sprinklers - so if you have 2” PVC pipes you want to get rid of- I am your girl!!! I also need 45° fittings (6 per bed!!) and soaker hoses Lol
Unfortunately we don’t get a lot of funding so if you have something you can donate we would love it. Our current needs are:
🌱Tomato cages
🌱Garden fencing (that stakes in the ground- only a foot or two high just to mark things the mowers and w**d eaters should not cut)
🌱Weed stop fabric
🌱Any vegetable plant starts that we could put in now to produce in August and September to get the kids excited about the garden as soon as we return
Our garden is a work in progress but has come a long way!!!!
