I’ve noticed that just about every person who’s outspoken against protecting Lambert Park in perpetuity under a conservation easement, is in some way tied to the development and real estate industries. Why would that be the case?

Wise cities throughout the state, including Draper, Park City, Provo and many others have set aside highly valued recreational open spaces under conservation easements, to protect them against future development. We have that opportunity in Alpine, and it would be a shame to waste it.

After careful vetting and upon the recommendation of our legal counsel (who also has many years of experience in constructing conservation easements), Utah Open Lands was chosen to help us with a conservation easement for Lambert Park. We are currently working on the final draft of the document, and then we will begin work on the management plan, which will be under the complete control of our city. Alpine will continue to control Lambert Park.

This is extremely important for our community and one of the most important things I hoped to accomplish as mayor. Just because some people only recently started paying attention, it doesn’t mean that the process has been rushed. Lambert has been a political football for years as a topic in many campaigns. It’s high time we do something meaningful to protect it for future generations.

Like everyone else on the planet, I’m trying to adjust to the new life that we’re now forced to accept, at least temporarily. It was a little too easy to underestimate the threat when it was just an outbreak in China, but then it moved on to Italy, then France, and then throughout Europe. When toilet paper became the new currency, I started taking notice. Then, that fateful night when the NBA was shut down, with the Utah Jazz at the epicenter, it became obvious that Covid-19 would soon have a direct impact on Alpine.

Fortunately, at least for now, there are no known confirmed cases within our city. But when that happens, and it most likely will, I expect to see the same compassion and desire to serve, as Alpiner’s have always demonstrated in the past. Panic will not rule the day, as it has in other places. We’ll take care of each other, and the city staff and elected leaders are here to support the community.

Below is a letter being distributed immediately. Please be prepared for a possible closure of City Hall and limitation of elective services, in order to protect our staff and the citizens of our community. All essential services will continue, and Alpine’s water system will remain safe and functional as always. Permit approvals and other requests may be delayed over the next several weeks, but we will do our best.

A big ā€œTHANK YOUā€ to the people who make up our community, for your support and kindness over the last several months (and really for the past 16 years). The campaign has finally come to a successful end, with almost all the votes counted. LOOKS LIKE WE DID IT!
I really appreciate the hard work and enthusiasm put in by so many! What a privilege to be in a town filled by such great people, who care about their community and its future.
Also, CONGRATULATIONS to new City Council members, Carla Merrill and Steve Cosper! Alpine will benefit greatly from their service and expertise!
I look forward to working with a highly productive new Council, as well as our team of caring and effective city staff. Alpine’s future is very bright!
Sheldon Wimmer is a good man with a strong commitment to our community, and he ran a respectful campaign. My thanks to him for his willingness to serve, and for his positive influence. Judi was also a strong candidate for Council and a positive force for Alpine business. I hope that she will remain fully engaged in the discussion of Alpine’s future.
Again, thank you for allowing me to serve you over the past 8 years as a Councilman, and for the next 4 years as your Mayor!

CLARIFICATION ON RECENT FLIER

In my recent mailer, I stated that 84% my opponent’s contributions were from anonymous or unnamed sources during the primary campaign. This is a true statement, as evidenced by the official financial disclosure form attached (see both pages) to this post. I did not state that 84% of his funding was anonymous, but out of $950 in his total contributions or donations by others, $800 is listed as ā€œanonymousā€ or ā€œdonatedā€, which is precisely 84.2%. Whether they are cash or ā€œin kindā€, they are seen as the same.
This is the truth, based on documented self-reporting which is required of all candidates. I do not feel it is negative to highlight information which is factual and relevant.
To be clear, contributions and self-funded dollars are different. My point is that people deserve total transparency, and it is a requirement of the law governing the election process.

You can find all candidate financial disclosures on our City website

YOU DESERVE TO BE INFORMED AND HEARD!

This Tuesday, our City Council meeting will feature TWO (2) additional annexation applications. One for Pine Grove, the 160 acre mountainside property above the rodeo grounds. The other is for ā€œKM8ā€, almost 70 acres above The Cove. BOTH ARE MOUNTAINSIDE DEVELOPMENTS.

Some may ask, ā€œwhy so many annexations in such a short period of time?ā€ I’d say that’s a very good question!

Why are we seeing this hyperactivity to expand Alpine’s borders just before an election? With the upcoming election, there’s a chance for transition to a Mayor and Council who will not be so eager to develop with reckless abandon!

Please don’t be tricked into believing that annexation is ā€œprofitableā€, as claimed by Mayor Wimmer in the last Alpine newsletter (Box Elder South). That claim has been proven wrong repeatedly, yet it CONTINUES TO BE USED AS A SELLING POINT (by the Mayor) to push annexations. Services and infrastructure gobble up almost every penny of property tax AND impact fees generated. Not to mention the additional burden on our water supply, which already requires us to ration / enforce conservation.

Come to our City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 24, 7:00 p.m., and voice your opinion. Let us know where you stand on continuous development of our hillsides and mountain corridors.
