Mental Health Awareness Month may have ended, but the conversation shouldn’t.

Behind every uniform is a person. A friend. A coworker. A family member. Someone who may be fighting a battle you can’t see.

Yesterday, members of our department came together to create this video as a reminder that it’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to ask for help.

Check in on your people. Listen without judgment. Reach out when someone comes to mind. A simple conversation can make a bigger difference than you realize.

❤️ You matter.
❤️ Your story matters.
❤️ Help is available.

We’ve been given a rare opportunity to train in an acquired structure within the City before it’s demolished in early June. These hands-on trainings provide invaluable real-world experience for our crews in a controlled environment.

Over the next several days, firefighters will be rotating through critical skill stations including:
• Roof ventilation operations
• VES/VEIS operations
• Forcible entry training
• Mayday drills
• Interior demolition and overhaul techniques

Each shift will also have designated areas for unrestricted demolition training, allowing crews to practice wall breaching, ceiling pulls, and other essential firefighting skills that are difficult to fully replicate in standard training environments.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this that help keep our firefighters prepared, sharpen our skills, and ultimately better serve our community.

🚨 STATION DISCOVERY 🚨

While removing some of the station's old exhaust extraction hoses for cleaning, crews uncovered what experts are calling the elusive Y2K Bug.

Based on preliminary findings, the creature has likely been living inside the exhaust system since approximately 1999, making it older than some of our firefighters.

Investigators believe it survived for decades on a diet consisting primarily of dust, cobwebs & bad decisions.

At first, the discovery seemed harmless.
Then, on the very same day it was disturbed, firefighters responded to 2 vehicle fires.

We're not saying the bug caused the fires.

We're just saying we had 0 vehicle fires before we found it and 2 vehicle fires afterward.

The suspect is currently being held for questioning but has refused to comment on the vehicle fires, the disappearance of station pens, or why the printer only jams when you're in a hurry.

Anyone with information regarding this creature's origins or accomplices is encouraged to contact the station immediately.

This morning, we welcomed retired members of the Alpena Fire Department back to the station for breakfast, coffee, stories, and plenty of catching up.

For many of us, the fire service is more than a career, it’s a second family. The men and women who came before us helped build the department and traditions we’re proud to carry on today. From decades of calls, training, and long shifts together, the bond never really leaves.

One of the best parts of the morning was hearing stories from generations past, including from our oldest retiree, now in his 90s. The room was filled with laughter, memories, and reminders of how much history lives within these walls.

This was the first retired firefighters breakfast we’ve hosted at the station, but it certainly won’t be the last. We hope to continue making this an annual tradition and, more importantly, to always keep our doors open to those who dedicated so much of their lives to serving this community.

Thank you to all of our retirees who joined us this morning. Once part of the fire family, always part of the fire family.

Alpena City Fire responded as part of a MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) activation for a forest fire in Mio yesterday.

Crews assisted with fire suppression & containment efforts alongside multiple agencies. Incidents like this highlight how critical mutual aid is & how seamlessly departments work together when it matters most.

Pictured are Andy Marceau, Lee Babcock, Chris Kinsey, and Dean Rivard (City of Alpena Fire), along with Ethan Himes (Long Rapids Fire Dept) and Mark Johnson (Alpena Township Fire Dept).

Great work by all departments involved! Truly a team effort!

The Alpena Fire Department recently had the honor of pinning five of our newest firefighters.

A badge represents more than a uniform. It symbolizes a commitment to serve our community and stand ready when our neighbors need us most.

In addition to joining the department, these firefighters have also begun the paramedic program, which they will complete over the next three years as they continue their training and dedication to providing the highest level of emergency care to the Alpena community.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Cale, Ryan, Delorrin, Elijah, & Mark to the team!
