A recent article highlights how Northern Michigan found a real solution to reduce school absenteeism, but funding for these efforts may be at risk. At NEMCSA, our School Success Program is doing this work every day. We help students and families overcome barriers like transportation, housing stress, and mental health challenges so kids can get to school and stay engaged.
When students show up, they learn more, build confidence, and have better long-term outcomes. Supporting attendance means supporting families and strengthening our communities. Read the full article here:

One reason Michigan is behind other states in test scores is because kids miss so much school. But a program hailed as a model is at risk of losing nearly half its funding.

Family engagement is at the heart of what we do. πŸ’š

This year, families at our ECS Head Start/GSRP center in Tawas City gathered for a special β€œHoly Guacamole” cooking event made possible through CACFP funding. Leading up to the event, classrooms read the book Holy Guacamole to get students excited about cooking and trying something new.

During the event, children and their parents or special guests worked together to make homemade guacamole and complete fun art activities. Every student had someone there to support them, making the day even more special.

Families were also able to take home cooking tools used during the event, including a mini electric food processor, colorful spatulas, and child-safe kitchen tools to continue making memories together at home.

The gratitude shared by families was truly moving. More importantly, the event created opportunities for connection, confidence-building, and joyful learning experiences for both children and adults alike.

Thank you to our incredible classroom staff and Family Service Coordinators for helping create meaningful moments for the families we serve. πŸ’š
