Over the weekend, Mariah from Lovely Little Lettering Co. was downtown bringing a new project to life, painting curbs and crosswalk areas along some of our busier pedestrian walkways.

The goal? Help draw attention to these areas, encourage drivers to slow down, and make getting around downtown a little safer (and a lot more fun to look at!). This project is part of a greater initiative the DDA is leading to improve safety for all users downtown, especially those walking and biking.

A huge thank you to Mariah for sharing her talent with downtown, to our DDA team and Department of Public Works for all the prep work that helped make this project possible. 💛

The The Social Vine is the new restaurant and bar that will be opening where Black Sheep Pub used to be. Give them a follow to stay updated with their progress! Opening early 2027.

We cannot wait to have them downtown— give them a warm welcome!

The next chapter of Olivet Book & Gift’s storefront starts now. 😍 We are so excited to welcome Lindsey and her team at Urban Bird & Company to Downtown Alpena!

For the last nine years, Urban Bird has been a popular women’s clothing and shoe store in downtown Cheboygan— and will now have an additional storefront in our very own downtown on the corner of Chisholm & 2nd Ave.

They plan to be opened by Witches Night Out (10/16).

Stay tuned for more updates, and please give them a warm welcome to downtown!

STREET CLOSURES FRIDAY & SATURDAY
On Friday, October 2, 2026, between 1:30 - 4:30 p.m., the following intersections will be closed intermittently for painting curb bump-outs and crosswalks:
• First Avenue from Chisholm Street to Water Street
• Second Avenue from Chisholm Street to Center Alley

Second Avenue, from Park Place to Water Street, will also be closed from 1:30 -6:30 p.m. for painting.

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., painting will take place on the sections near the Second Avenue Bridge.

Additionally on Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Second Avenue Bridge will be closed to all traffic to allow for maintenance work on the bridge. The bridge closure is expected to last (1) one day. The bridge will be open to all traffic on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Signage and barricades will be present to guide traffic around the closures. Commuters are advised to plan accordingly and should anticipate seeking alternate routes.

The Alpena DDA, with the help of volunteers with the One Water Gathering, will be painting crosswalks and curb extensions as part of efforts to enhance safety downtown for those biking and walking downtown. Flexible delineators will also be placed around the curbs to further enhance safety.

The DDA will be collecting data over the next several months to see if these changes make it safer for people crossing the street, while alerting drivers they are entering an area where they should expect people to be walking and biking.
