👨🏼‍🧑🏾‍🧒🏽THE MAN WHO SHOWS UP: Small Moments. Lasting Impact.

Sometimes, being a positive role model doesn't mean having all the answers. It means showing up.

It's checking in when a boy seems quieter than usual. Listening without judgment. Admitting when you're wrong. Showing that frustration doesn't have to turn into hurting someone else. And reminding young men that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. 🫶🏼

This World Mental Health Day, we're recognizing the important role men can play in supporting boys' mental health and building a culture of healthy relationships, respect, and accountability. 💜

You don't have to be a perfect role model. You just have to be willing to show up.

Want to make a difference? Get involved with Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP)!

Hope Shores Alliance offers opportunities to engage with MVP, a peer prevention initiative that promotes education, dialogue, and proactive planning to recognize, intervene in, and prevent violence. 🤝

We're looking for men who want to use their experiences, skills, and passions to help young people build healthier relationships and become leaders in preventing violence. Whether you're a coach, father, mentor, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, you can help create change.

Let's be the men who make it okay to talk, ask for help, and treat others with respect. Because prevention starts long before violence occurs.

💜 Thank you to everyone who attended our first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Art Show! 💜

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible. A special thank you to Brian Schorn at Alpena Community College for his hard work, collaboration, and support in bringing this event to life.

We are especially grateful to the artists who showed incredible vulnerability by sharing their work with our community. Art can be such a powerful way to express experiences, emotions, and resilience, and we are honored that you chose to share your work with us.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support survivors and help bring awareness to domestic violence. Your presence and willingness to engage in these conversations matter. 💜

The theme of our show was resilience, and we want to leave you with this reminder: resilience can look different for everyone. It can be loud. It can be quiet. It can be messy. It can be slow. But no matter what it looks like, it is meaningful.

Thank you again to everyone who helped make our first art show so meaningful. We hope this is the first of many. 💜

💜 PURPLE IS A VERB: SAY SOMETHING

Your friend says:
“He just gets jealous because he loves me so much.”

What would you say?

Maybe you’d know exactly what to say. Or maybe you’d freeze. Laugh nervously. Change the subject. Or think of the perfect response three hours later.

That’s human. 🫶

When we’re faced with something upsetting, threatening, or unfamiliar, we don’t always respond the way we wish we had. Survivors may also minimize, rationalize, or make excuses for abuse as ways of coping with overwhelming experiences.

That’s one reason practicing matters.

We can talk with our friends before we’re in the moment:

💜 What do healthy relationships look like?
💜 What are our values?
💜 How do we want to support each other?
💜 What could we say if we’re worried about someone?

Because when the moment comes, having practiced can make it easier to act on what we already believe.

That’s what bystander intervention is about. You don’t have to be a superhero. You don’t need the perfect words. And you don’t have to handle it alone.

Through Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP), Hope Shores Alliance helps people practice real-life intervention strategies, including:

🗣️ DIRECT — Say something.
🙃 DISTRACT — Interrupt the situation.
🤝 DELEGATE — Get someone who can help.
⏰ DELAY — Check in afterward.
📱 DOCUMENT / PROTOCOL — Follow appropriate procedures when needed.

The goal isn’t to respond perfectly.
The goal is to be more prepared to respond.
Our communities will only be safe if we all do the work to make them safe!

💜 Purple is a verb. Let’s practice it.

Want to bring Mentors in Violence Prevention to your school, team, congregation, or group? Hope Shores Alliance offers MVP programming at no cost to participating community partners.

💜 Believe. Support. Validate.

When violence is minimized, dismissed, or explained away, survivors may be left questioning their own experiences. But no one else gets to decide how serious their pain was or what they should have endured.

Believe survivors. Support their choices. Validate their experiences.

Your words and your response can make a difference. Instead of asking “Was it really that bad?” ask “How can I support you?”

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Hope Shores Alliance stands — because every experience matters, and every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and supported.

💜 Hope Shores Alliance — Believe. Support. Validate.

We Need a Trot Crew!

The Trot is back this year in Oscoda, Thanksgiving morning, and we need a few wonderful humans to help us pull it off!

You do not have to run. You do not have to be athletic. And you won't be giving up your whole Thanksgiving Day. Most volunteer roles are only about 1–2 hours and will be finished by lunchtime.

We need friendly faces to help with registration, cheer and direct participants along the course, help at the finish line, and lend a hand with setup and cleanup.

Bring your coffee, bundle up, grab a friend and spend part of Thanksgiving morning helping Hope Shores Alliance create a fun community event that supports survivors right here at home.

Thursday, November 26 - Oscoda
The Turkey Trot begins at 10:00 a.m.
