"You think I’m playin’, ha?"
In 1998, Juvenile dropped his first hit single "Ha" I was a 16 year old white kid in the suburbs driving my parents spare decade old Volvo & had no connection to street life yet Juvenile was kind enough to introduce himself & educate a young WB1 as the racially transcendent benevolent contemplative emissary of "the struggle" like the true G that he is. Thank you Juvenile ❤️👑
"Ha" hit like some accidentally awakened ancient vengeful God & all ears instantly turned towards him & the rising tide of "Cash Money Records" which was quietly (& righteously) taking over the entire game from NOLA. Around the same time Will Smith was inappropriately grinding on & blowing out the guts of every living room floor box TV in America with his super extra uncool auditory atrocity: “Gittin Jiggy Wit It" which was & remains so bad I'd rather listen to 10 thousand fingernails drag across a chalkboard than ever hear that weak, limp hot garbage, ever again.
Anyone back then that loved "Ha" loved it for wildly different reasons. Some loved the beat, word. Some loved the grit, word. Some loved the menacing beauty of the music video, word. Some idiots (me 😀), pretended to love it for the lyrics yet they didn't really understand it all at all, not until way later in life at least, ha.
The video is a gritty visual snapshot of raw deep hood pre Katrina NOLA where a young, mean, shirtless & constantly sneering Juvenile scolds & beats the camera with his lyrical fists of truth. The masculine beat channels elements of controlled aggression coupled with angular snaps of sharp thematic acoustics which should not work together yet TEAM UP perfectly like sea salt on caramel or refrigerated melted chocolate on strawberries.
Juvenile drops🔥 with:
"You a paper chaser
You got you block on fire
Remaining a G until the moment you expire
You know what it is to make nothing out of som**hing
You handle your biz and don't be cryin and suffering"
Initially *or for years, you think the track is som**hing routine, a flex up of flash $ & exotic cars man thug life an all balling outta control ya'll...yet one day, just like Mac "finally seeing" the Predator standing out there...in them trees, everything finally sinks in & that hand-held M134 Minigun finally starts singing it's sweet song of... understanding.
Somewhere between catharsis & self interrogation you can’t help but feel both the contempt and care in Juvenile’s words.
"You full of that diesel ha
You duckin them people ha
Your face was on the news last night ha
You the one that robbed them little dudes out they shoes last night ha"
They’re smug, yet sincere, as if to say “You a grown man, so I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but you ain’t the only grown man out here so open your eyes my man, you can learn, or burn." It's a prophetic advisory, a stern yet selfless & empathetic warning. Metaphorically Juvenile summons & illuminates the ancient tale of young Icarus ignoring Daedalus's wise instructions to not fly too close to the sun & causing the beeswax in his wings to melt. Icarus ignores this powerful warning, falls from the sky & plunges into the sea to his entirely avoidable demise.
The myth gave rise to the idiom, "don't fly too close to the sun." So thank you Juvenile, young me is forever grateful. I ain't no youngster no more ha. I got obligations to my community now ha. We need to protect & serve ya now ha. Thus now, a 44 year old WB1 now warmly offers this up to our County & it's youngsters ha;
**Obligatory WBSO Avert DUI Offer** IF, you are too sauced to drive home this weekend, call WBSO Dispatch, 785 765 3323, ask for the funny man, order me like a pizza & I'll get you home safe & sound no questions asked.
