Congratulations to our Student of the Year, Brandon Mills. Brandon received a $750 scholarship from the club to further his studies in neuroscience at Central Michigan University this fall. Way to go!

Our Student of the Month for May is Samantha Cooper. She is the daughter of Jaqi-sue and Terry Cooper. Samantha has been a part of National Honor’s Society since her sophomore year and participates in many service opportunities throughout the community. She has consistently volunteered for the Isabella County animal shelter since her freshman year and realized her love for service and animals through the work she did. Samantha also has a very strong love for music, as she has been a part of the jazz band and concert band all of high school. She has participated in both district and state Solo and Ensemble competitions and earned many medals for duets and solo performances. In marching and concert band, she is co-section leader of the flute section. Samantha has been a member of the varsity tennis team since freshman year and in the position of first singles for both junior and senior year. She is also a co-captain on the team. She has worked at the Alma Public Library since the summer of 2021 and loves to help those in her community through her job. Samantha will continue these activities during and after college. Samantha is enrolled at Michigan Technological University for the upcoming fall semester and plans to major in chemical engineering. She will also join the band or orchestra at the college and the tennis team. She wants to continue her work as a librarian through the college or in the public library while living in Houghton, and help that community the same way she has helped Alma. She also hopes to find other interests during college and work toward discovering her dream job while earning her Bachelor’s degree.

Our Student of the Month for April was Brynn Buschle. Brynn is the daughter of Shelly and Dan Buschle and has one older sister, Emma Buschle. She is currently serving as the Secretary of the National Honors Society, a member of the Senior class board, and a member of the Student Council. In school, Brynn loves challenging herself by dual-enrolling at both Alma College and Mid-Michigan College, as well as taking AP courses. Brynn dances competitively at her local studio Duhadway Dance Dimensions and has done so for the past 10 years. At her dance studio, she also helps as a teacher assistant. She also works at the Blockhouse. In the past, she has participated in Youth Advisory Council and various other volunteer and leadership opportunities. When not in school, she loves hanging out with her friends and reading. After high school, Brynn plans on attending Grand Valley State University where she will pursue a double major in Dance and Marketing.

Our March Student of the Month was Holden Davis. Holden is the son of Aaron and Richelle Davis. Throughout high school, Holden has been involved in a wide variety of activities in both academics and extracurricular. He has been a member of the football program for four years and was honored to be a team captain as well as earning Academic All-State in his senior season. He has been a member of the National Honor Society for three years. Holden has also actively participated in the Youth Advisory Council, Class Board, College Club, Model UN and 4H. He has earned the DAR Good Citizen Award and the National Chemical Society High School Scholar Award. Holden has enjoyed the opportunity of taking college classes and will be graduating with 19 college credits along with receiving a 5/5 on both the AP US Government and Politics exam and the AP Calculus exam. Last fall he began an engineering co-op with Powell Solutions which has proved to be an excellent opportunity to continue to develop his engineering skills. In his spare time, Holden enjoys lifting weights, reading, and spending time with his friends. In July Holden will be attending Kettering University’s Honors program to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Our Student of the Month for February was Lauren Brasher, Lauren is the oldest daughter of Todd and Rachel Brasher and has one younger brother, Andrew Brasher. She is serving as President of the National Honors Society and President of her class. She has served on class board and participated in Student Council for four years, and has been on Student Council’s executive board. Lauren has participated in varsity sideline cheerleading for four years and varsity basketball for two years. This year, she is one of the team captains of the basketball team. In the past, she has been a part of the Youth Advisory Council and participated in many leadership groups. In school, she enjoys taking college and AP classes that are challenging, but fun! Outside of school, Lauren likes to travel, read, and hang out with friends. Next year, she plans on attending Grand Valley State University but is undecided on a major.

Our January Student of the Month was Moritz Richter. Moritz is the son of Marcus and Ellen Richter. Moritz is immensely involved in athletics, extra-curricular, and academics. Moritz plays soccer, he has been on the varsity soccer team for four years. This year he is proud to be one of the team captains. Moritz also received the Sportsmanship and Dedication team award, All-District, and All-Conference this year. In school, Moritz is the Student Council president and National Honor Society vice-president. He enjoys working with his peers and teachers to make school a better place. He is also involved with the Class Board and Youth Advisory Council. Moritz has been working at Terry's Cycle for 3 years. He enjoys learning new things, working on bikes, and cycling. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, camping, and hanging out with friends. Moritz has always challenged himself in academics. He is taking multiple college and AP classes, while still doing all his other activities. Next year, Moritz is undecided but plans on attending Kettering or Michigan State University to major in chemical engineering.

Our Student of the Month for December was Brandon Mills. Brandon is the son of Eric and Billie Sanko and Brian Mills. Brandon has interacted with organizations and groups such as NHS, HOSA, and the Alma High School Band. He has been one of three drum majors for the AHS marching band for two years as an active leader and conductor. He has also been playing in the Alma High School Jazz Ensemble since his freshman year playing the alto saxophone. Brandon has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years. He is also the president of Alma High Schools 2021 HOSA chapter and plans to use his knowledge of healthcare leadership in his college endeavors. Throughout high school he has worked to maintain a grade point average of 3.8 while also partaking in courses related to anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and healthcare. Because of both Alma’s CTE Health Occupations program and HOSA, he has gained a profound interest in all healthcare related fields. Brandon plans to attend Central Michigan University in the fall of 2022 to obtain his bachelor's degree in neuroscience or pre-med. After receiving his degree he intends to pursue medical school in hopes of M.D. certification.

November's Student of the Month was Deacon Dennison. Deacon is the son of Scott and Paula Dennison. Deacon is heavily involved in academics and athletics here at Alma. He has ran for four years on the Cross Country team and was named Captain his senior year. He also has been a part of the Swim and Dive team, and been on the track team for four years this previous year qualifying for the State meet in Pole Vault. Deacon has participated in band since middle school in the concert, jazz, and marching band. He was nominated Section leader his senior year for the clarinet section. Deacon is also an active member of the Senior Class Board and NHS. Outside of school Deacon is also involved in scouting. This previous year he was awarded the rank of Eagle, the highest rank possible in Scouting. This was added to a long list of other accomplishments in scouting including the position of Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and being a member of Troop 111’s Mackinac Island Honor Guard. At this time Deacon is undecided in what he would like to major in or where he would like to attend college, but knows he wants to compete in Track and Field at a collegiate level.

Our Student of the Month from October was Anna-Marie Comden. Anna-Marie is the daughter of Christopher and Jessie Comden. She has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years and was the secretary for the Business Professionals of America last year. Anna-Marie has been involved in the band as a percussionist since sixth grade and has played in the Jazz Band, Concert Band and Marching Band. Along with the band, she has run cross country since eighth grade and played softball since sixth. Outside of school, she has played the violin for nine years with the Gratiot String Association and is actively involved in her church and youth group. Her hobbies include reading, being outdoors, spending time with her family, and learning new things. Anna’s favorite classes are anything science related, especially Human Anatomy and Chemistry. Anna has a loving family consisting of her parents, three older siblings, one younger sister, and a foreign exchange student who has joined the family for the year. After high school, Anna plans to go to college and study to be a physical therapist.

Over the next several days, we'll be highlighting each of our Student of the Month honorees from Alma High School. One of these worthy seniors will be named the Student of the Year at Honors Night!

Our first honoree is September's Student of the Month, Bonnie Lord. Bonnie is the daughter of Steve and Shannon Lord. She is the current President of the GSA. Bonnie has also been a Girl Scout with Troop #50649 of Alma for 13 years and is currently an Ambassador level scout. She has served two years on the Mackinac Island Governor’s Honor Guard, and hopes to return in the spring of 2022. She is looking forward to completing her Gold Award Project, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, in the coming year. Bonnie also plays mellophone in the Alma High School marching band and French horn in the concert band. She is the Co-President of the College Club. After school, Bonnie works part-time at Jimmy John’s in Alma. At school, Bonnie challenges herself academically. She has taken multiple Advanced Placement Courses and dual enrolls at Mid-Michigan College online. She is a member of the National Honor Society Chapter of Alma High School. She enjoys sewing, baking, and reading in her spare time. Bonnie hopes to attend a college or university in the future and pursues interests in history, ecology, and leadership.
