IMPORTANT NOTICE TO WATER CUSTOMERS

Beginning June 17, 2026 and continuing thru July 10, 2026 in an effort to provide better water quality, the City of Alma, as part of its annual maintenance activities, will temporarily change its method of disinfection.

Chloramines, which is chlorine mixed with ammonia, is normally used. During this temporary change, free chlorine – without ammonia – will be used.

Customers may notice an unusual chlorine taste or odor in their tap water during this period. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects. Your water will remain safe for drinking and other normal uses.

Free chlorine is a slightly stronger disinfectant than chloramines, and it is introduced to diversify the treatment process. Changing to free chlorine periodically provides additional protection against bacteria helping to ensure that the water you receive remains safe and free of bacteria.

This annual practice is recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Rural Water Association as a necessary practice to properly maintain the quality of water delivered by distribution systems.

Customers who are particularly sensitive to the taste and smell of chlorine can store an open container of drinking water in their refrigerators, which will help the chlorine taste to dissipate.

At the end of the program we will be using fire hydrants to flush the system. Occasionally, water becomes discolored after hydrant flushing. If this happens, run your cold water tap for a few minutes until the water clears. If it doesn't clear the first time, wait a few minutes and run the water again. You should avoid washing clothes until the water clears.

If you have large tree limbs, you can place them near the curb. As time allows the city guys will come pick them up. It may take several days to get to them.
