Did you know that most Lowes, Home Depot and Staples stores have battery collection bins? If you don't see the collection bins, ask at the customer service counter. Rechargeable batteries are a real threat for sanitation workers, transfer stations, recycling facilities and landfills. For everyone's safety, DO NOT put rechargeable batteries in trash or recycling bins. SCIA accepts scrap metal on Convenience Center Days. The Convenience Center is open for residents on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm (please arrive by 2:45 to ensure you can finish unloading by 3:00 pm). PLEASE REMOVE BATTERIES, from e-bikes, scooters, hoverboards, etc. We're glad to answer questions about what to bring and when to bring it -- 856-935-7900.

SCIA was happy to host students from the Strang School Hope, Inc. over the past 5 weeks. As part of their extended summer learning program, groups of students and staff visited us on Tuesday afternoons, touring the landfill with JILL, Landfill Tech/Safety Coordinator; and SANDIE, Recycling Coordinator. Students were educated on the leachate and methane collection systems, and why it's important to keep recyclable and hazardous items out of the landfill. They also witnessed our heavy machinery in use and conceptualize the technology of that machinery -- which is to optimize the existing footprint and extend the lifespan of the landfill. Students also visited the Convenience Center and got a birds-eye view from atop a closed cell. That cell is about 150' in elevation, and on a clear day it's a million-dollar view. Unfortunately, pics from this particular day only captured a very hazy, humid sky. These youngsters had some very educated questions and came prepared with curriculum-based knowledge. We love to see the wheels spinning -- these young adults will be tasked with finding new, innovative ways to manage waste much more efficiently for future generations. A special thank you, Mr. Pete Ellis, for being our Lyft. And Pete, when you are ready to wear a yellow vest full time (lol), we have the perfect job for you! 😄

I know the kids are dreading anything/everything related to "back-to-school" activities, but here we are, ~a month away from the first day of school photos. If you are shopping for new stuff, think about donating the same number of old pieces of clothing vs the number of newly purhased items. Consider other family members, friends, or neighbors and organize a clothing swap for items in great condition. Many local organizations will take items in good condition too. When you've sorted out what's left, even if those items are not in great condition, you can bring them to the SCIA Convenience Center for FREE. Did you know that SCIA houses a Salvation Army clothing drop box? Items that are in good condition will be sorted and sold in their Thrift Store. Other items are donated for needs within their organization (transitional/rehabilitation centers). What's deemed unwearable after SA' sorts will be shredded down and recycled for use as commercial grade shop cloths, cleaning wipes, etc. The goal is to keep all textiles out of the landfill! The Convenience Center is currently open to residents on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm (must check in by 2:45 and finish unloading by 3). Please bring clothing only, do not mix with other items for unloading at the Convenience Center or standard tipping fees must be applied. If you have questions, please call 856-935-7900 x16.

Please don’t put last year’s clothes in the trash! Bring clothing to the Convenience Center on Monday, Wednesday or Saturday, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, and deposit clothing items in the Salvation Army drop-box. If you come in with clothing only, it will be accepted free of charge. Please check in with scale personnel upon arrival. If you have questions, please call the Recycle Coordinator @ 856-935-7900 x16.

It was a beautiful summer evening with our Pennsville friends, neighbors and community partners. Executive Director Julie Acton and Recycling Coordinator Sandie Kearney enjoyed participating in Pennsville's NNO festivities at Riverview Beach Park. Great music, fun activities, and so many friendly interactions. We enjoyed catching up with old friends and meeting new friends too. Already looking forward to NNO 2027. Thank you to all of the organizers for your efforts!

We get asked this question a lot. "How do I safely dispose of used syringes/sharps?" We're glad you asked! Salem County now has two (2) medical sharps drop boxes. Please review the attached the flyer for more information on where the boxes are located, and approved ways to contain them for safe transport and depositing them in the drop boxes.
