Landfill 101 – June 2026

Each month, we share a landfill advisory to help our community better understand how to dispose of the “hard stuff.” These quick updates are designed to be helpful, easy to read, and focused on saving you time, money, and frustration when you visit the landfill.

Free Landfill Passes: What You Need to Know
City of Alliance residents receive free landfill passes each year—and they’re a great way to save money when used correctly.
If you receive an envelope from the City this month, be sure to open it—your passes are inside.
________________________________________

How the Passes Work
Each resident receives:
• 2 free landfill passes
• Each pass is tied to your name and city account number
• Expiration date: June 30, 2027
Each pass covers one load, no matter the size—but it is one load per pass.
________________________________________

What You Can Use Them For
Free passes work great for:
• Household cleanups
• Garage or storage unit cleanouts
• Large items like couches or mattresses
Using your passes is a great alternative to dumping items in alleys or other illegal disposal.
________________________________________

What They Do NOT Cover
At the bottom of each pass, it states they are not valid for certain materials, including:
• Construction & demolition (C&D) debris
(We covered this in last month’s post—these materials have separate handling requirements.)
• Appliances
This can be confusing—what it means is appliances that contain Freon, such as:
o Refrigerators
o Freezers
✅ Allowed:
o Ovens
o Dishwashers
o Other non-Freon household items
Why?
Appliances with Freon require special handling to safely remove the refrigerant before disposal. This process takes extra time and equipment, so they are not covered by free passes.
• Tires
If you’re ever unsure whether something counts, just ask at the scale or give us a call—we’re happy to help.
________________________________________

Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Forgetting to bring your pass with you
• Assuming it covers restricted materials
• Trying to use one pass for multiple loads
A little preparation helps ensure everything goes smoothly when you arrive.
________________________________________

The Bottom Line
Free landfill passes are a valuable benefit for City residents.
Using them the right way:
• Saves you money
• Helps keep Alliance clean
• Keeps disposal quick and efficient

At its last meeting, the City Council discussed the current 7:00 p.m. meeting time and whether a different time may better serve the Council and the community.

Council meetings are currently held at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Like many public boards, meeting times are generally set in a way that allows elected officials to attend while also providing reasonable access for the public.
During the discussion, several comments were shared that the current meeting time may create challenges for home and family schedules. Council also requested that an ordinance be prepared for consideration at the next meeting, with the proposed meeting time left blank so the Council can consider available options before making a decision.

Before that discussion occurs, the City would like to invite public feedback.

Public feedback will help the Council better understand community preferences before considering any possible change to the regular meeting time

Alliance Cemetery Staff would like to inform the public that cemetery cleanup activities will take place the Monday following Memorial Day to prepare the grounds for summer mowing and seasonal maintenance. As part of this annual cleanup, items left on graves that may interfere with maintenance operations will be removed to allow for safe and efficient upkeep of the cemetery grounds.

Families wishing to retain personal or sentimental items are encouraged to remove them prior to the Monday, June 1, 2026, following Memorial Day. Staff may hold certain items that remain in good condition for a short period of time; however, those items will eventually be disposed of if unclaimed.

The City of Alliance appreciates the community's cooperation and understanding. For questions regarding acceptable decorations or clean up procedures, please contact the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center at (308) 762-2384.

Building safety impacts more than just construction—it affects our entire community.

Every five years, Verisk conducts a Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule to evaluate how well building codes are enforced and how much construction is completed without permits. These results play an important role in determining insurance risk and can even influence insurance rates.

Strong code enforcement helps ensure safer structures, protects property, and supports long-term community resilience.
