Titanic Aerodynamics: Did They Exist?
Although the superstructure of Olympic-class ships (like the Titanic) was rectangular, prioritizing hydrodynamics over aerodynamics, the curved indentation at the transition from A Deck to the promenade was not intended for passenger comfort or airflow, but rather as a functional extension to conceal the internal staircase connecting B Deck to the lifeboat holds and the officers' promenade. This staircase within the indentation holds historical significance, as on the night of the Titanic's sinking, Second Officer Charles Lightoller used it to peer inside and monitor the ship's descent.
