Arthur Henry Rostron: The Captain Who Saved the Titanic

Sir Arthur Henry Rostron was the captain of the Carpathia, famous for his heroic rescue of the survivors of the Titanic in April 1912, a feat that earned him fame, honors, and a successful career. Beyond this historic event, the Cunard Line commodore's life was filled with fascinating experiences, from his military service aboard the HMS Grafton during the Spanish-American War (1897–1898), his controversial claim to have seen a sea monster while serving in Campania, to the unique story of receiving a black cat as a gift from a Titanic survivor. Titanic's Stern Implosion

The complete collapse of the Titanic's aft compartments (from the turbine hall to the propeller shaft corridor) was caused by the phenomenon of implosion—an inward explosion caused by extreme air compression. As the remaining stern of the ship rose almost vertically and sank, the tightly closed doors and hatches trapped a huge volume of air in the cavities below deck, such as the dynamo compartment and the water tanks. As the ship sank into the ocean depths, the drastically increased hydrostatic pressure of the water created a pressure differential of up to 9 atmospheres. Because the trapped air could not escape quickly enough to reach equilibrium, the enormous water pressure eventually crushed and forced the air out, triggering the rapid collapse of all three aft compartments.

What did the Titanic look like before it was discovered?

Just before Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel discovered the wreck of the Titanic, which had apparently split in two, many optimists hoped the ship was still intact, including artist and visual historian Ken Marschall. Through his paintings in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Marschall painted an optimistic vision of the Titanic lying on the seabed in perfect condition, complete with upright masts and intact paintwork. Although the reality of the discovery proved otherwise, Marschall's early attempts to visualize the condition of the ship on the seabed have become a key visual reference and a recognized masterpiece in depicting the Titanic wreckage to this day.
