Allentown Rescue Mission

The goal of the Allentown Rescue Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and restore men experiencing homelessness.

The Allentown Rescue Mission is more than a shelter. We offer three distinct programs to address the needs of all the men who seek our help: the Emergency Shelter, Transformation Program, and the Clean Team Workforce. Additionally, we've partnered with DeSales University to provide health services to the men in our care. Our Emergency Shelter provides safe housing, nutritionally balanced meals, cl

othing and connects the men to various social service and support organizations. We offer our services to all men over 18 regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation. The Transformation Program is a residential rehabilitation program that tackles the root causes of homelessness. Through individual assessment and one-on-one guidance, we help the men in our care make and execute plans to improve their lives. This nondenominational, faith-based program is designed to teach homeless men life skills and job literacy skills. The Clean Team Workforce is a development program offered to graduates of the Transformation Program. In the Clean Team Workforce, the men gain work experience, connect with outside employers, and accumulate enough savings to fund their transition back into the community. Thus completing the transformation from homelessness to employed, independent living. In 2007, the Allentown Rescue Mission partnered with DeSales University to create the DeSales Free Medical Clinic. The clinic is staffed by volunteer doctors, physician assistants, DeSales faculty, and physician assistants students. The clinic is free of charge for all the guests of the Allentown Rescue Mission.

Meet Kevin, a recent guest of our Emergency Shelter.

Kevin worked a steady job at a shipping company, but everything fell apart when he became suddenly disabled. He lost his job, and his home afterwards when his mom sold their house. While staying with his sister, Kevin found the Allentown Rescue Mission and decided to come to the Emergency Shelter to ask for help. When he arrived, he was surprised to find it a “cozy environment” and felt like he could finally relax.

With the help of the staff, Kevin was able to care for his physical needs while getting resources together to apply for disability aid and housing assistance. He is looking forward to securing a steady income as he prepares to return to school for a new career in the medical field. Good luck, Kevin!

Meet one of our graduates: Akiva!

Akiva spent most of his childhood bouncing around the foster care system. He graduated from high school, but was arrested at 17 years old and spent several years in jail. After his release, he didn't have anywhere to go, and that's when he found the Allentown Rescue Mission.

Akiva enrolled in the Transformation Program and learned how to control his anger, manage his finances, and other basic life skills. He soon discovered an opportunity through CareerLink Lehigh Valley to enroll in the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute's welding program. He completed all welding classes while also completing the Transformation Program requirements, and passed both with flying colors. Through the Mission's scholarship program, his tuition to CareerLink and his transportation were fully covered.

For a while, Akiva worked on the Clean Team Workforce while fulfilling his remaining welding requirements. Working at an auto salvage yard allowed him to learn basic job skills while beginning to build some savings. Soon, he interviewed and was hired with L&M Fabrication and Machine, and began working as a trainee. However, Akiva quickly moved up as his talents sharpened, after only one week, secured a station promotion.

At 22 years old, Akiva has found success. A steady job, a new car, and a solid savings account has given him the safety and security he needs to find his independence as an adult. Now, he is on a fast track to an apartment of his own. Congratulations Akiva! We are so proud of how far you've come.

Meet Daniel, a recent guest of our Emergency Shelter.

Born and raised in nearby Bethlehem, Daniel lived a life of adventure. Passionate for the outdoors, he obtained a degree in fish biology and worked as a caddy for a country club. However, just as he found stability, tragedy struck. Daniel’s son passed away, and he developed severe mental health issues as a result.

Daniel’s life had to pause as he sought treatment, and after a stay in the hospital, he was referred to the Allentown Rescue Mission. Upon his arrival, he was grateful for the clothing, healthy meals, and support he received, noting that not having to worry about basic needs brought him a sense of peace. Now, he is looking forward to joining the Transformation Program to learn new financial management skills and find stable housing. Good luck, Daniel!

Meet Edwin, a recent guest of our Emergency Shelter.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Edwin led a normal life. His passions for sports, cooking, and construction carried him to adult life, until tragedy struck when his little brother suddenly passed away. Edwin turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with the loss, and soon found himself in the depths of addiction.

After becoming a father, Edwin knew he needed to change for his kids, so he began to get sober and research local shelters. His search led him to the Allentown Rescue Mission, and he decided to come to the Emergency Shelter. When he arrived, he was grateful for the clean environment and felt like he could relax. Now, with renewed energy and motivation, Edwin looks forward to enrolling in CDL training to jumpstart his career in commercial driving, and to become a stable parent for his children. Meet Anthony, a current resident of our Transformation Program.

Anthony's life has been filled with hard work, family, and reinvention. Over the years, he built many careers, always willing to embrace new opportunities. He was married for 30 years and is a proud father to his son and daughter.

After Anthony's father passed away in 2021, Anthony returned to his childhood home and found that the house had fallen into extreme disrepair. Anthony poured his savings into trying to restore it; however his father had neglected to pay his property tax, and the house was sold before he could finish the work. After losing both his father and his home, Anthony found himself living in his car.

Looking for help, Anthony checked in to a psychiatric hospital for temporary mental health treatment. When he was discharged, he was referred to the Allentown Rescue Mission and came to the Emergency Shelter. He was grateful for the clean clothes and comfortable bed and felt like he could relax for the first time in a long while. When he heard about the Transformation Program, he jumped at the chance to rebuild a new life.

Today, Anthony plans to renew his CDL license and return to work in trucking, one of his previous careers. His goal is to reconnect with his children and rebuild his savings. For anyone facing hardship, Anthony had this to say: “The team here is wonderful and helpful, they’ve given me a chance to work on myself and rebuild. If you’re in trouble, come here and check it out. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It could be the start of getting your life back on track.” Good luck, Anthony!

Meet Randy, a recent guest of our Emergency Shelter.

Randy grew up in poverty in New Jersey. He was frequently bullied and physically abused because of his circumstances. With few friends and a mother struggling with alcoholism, he spent much of his early life feeling isolated and searching for acceptance.

At 11 years old, Randy ran away from home. Life on the streets exposed him to drugs, unhealthy influences, and years of homelessness. As he grew older, untreated mental health issues led him to make increasingly destructive choices, landing him in prison.

While incarcerated, Randy became a Christian and his faith became motivation to repair his life. After his release, he moved to Pennsylvania but continued to face homelessness.

With the help of his church, Randy learned about the Allentown Rescue Mission and entered the Emergency Shelter. He was surprised by the genuine care and encouragement he received from staff and fellow guests.

Today, Randy's greatest focus is addressing his mental health and creating a stable future. He hopes to secure housing, find employment by enrolling in the Transformation Program, and improve his financial stability. Good luck, Randy!
