Founded in 1999, MCEMS (Muhlenberg College Emergency Medical Services) serves over 2,200 students, visitors, faculty and staff at Muhlenberg College located in Allentown, PA in Lehigh County. It is an all-volunteer, student-run organization, which serves as a volunteer Pennsylvania Department of Health-certified Quick Response Service. Our 45 members answer approximately 150 calls for medical assi
stance annually. MCEMS is in service 24/7. When the College Health Center is closed, during nights (5pm-8am) and weekends, a duty crew responds to calls. While a scramble crew of whoever is available responds to calls during the daytime hours. MCEMS also provides stand-by services for major campus events such as music concerts and Commencement. MCEMS also sponsors CPR/AED classes that are open to the Muhlenberg community. MCEMS works closely with Student Health Services, Campus Safety, Allentown EMS Paramedics, and Cetronia EMS. MCEMS is dispatched by the Muhlenberg College Department of Campus Safety & Security via a tone and voice paging system during nights and weekends. During the daytime response hours (8am-5pm), all EMTs receive an alert and communicate via a cell phone app, Active911. Our vehicle (QRS-1) responds to all calls, in addition to a Campus Safety Police Officer. Currently, our response times average 3-4 minutes. QRS-1 is a fully stocked Emergency First Response unit which carries the same equipment as a Basic Life Support Ambulance, with the exception of a stretcher. After an initial assessment and stabilization, the crew may consult with an on-call Nurse from the College Health Center. Our patients are typically transported to local urgent care centers (Patient First and Cedar Crest EmergiCenter) by MCPD or Lehigh Valley Hospitals (Cedar Crest & 17th Street locations) and St. Luke's Hospital by Allentown EMS or Cetronia EMS. If the patient requires Advanced Life Support or requests ambulance transportation, the Campus Safety dispatcher activates the 911 Phone System established in Allentown. All MCEMS services are free of charge, and patient confidentiality is of utmost importance. We can be summoned by calling Campus Safety at 484-664-3110 or x3110.
