Communities in Schools of Eastern Pennsylvania Surrounding students with a community of support to empower them to stay in school and achieve in life

Founded in 1983, Communities In Schools of Eastern PA serves more than 35,000 students across 40+ schools in 10 school districts. Part of the Communities In Schools national network, CIS of Eastern PA is an independent 501(c)(3) organization working to better educational outcomes for students in Northampton, Lehigh and Berks Counties. Providing over 35 years of academic support and resources, CIS of Eastern PA is a trusted leader that our community can count on. At CIS of Eastern PA, we see potential in every student and are committed to helping them see it, too. Students across our region face overwhelming roadblocks to their academic and personal success - learning disabilities, homelessness, bullying, emotional effects of trauma, untreated medical conditions, lack of school supplies, clothes and food. We're in schools to spot and overcome the roadblocks in our students' way, so that all kids have the same opportunity to succeed.

Every student deserves a trusted adult in their corner 💙

The first few weeks of school are an important time for students to establish routines and build connections. At , we know that Being Present Matters from the very beginning.

Last year, more than 1 in 4 students were chronically absent. Even a few missed days early in the year can have a lasting impact. Half of students who miss 2 to 4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.

When students receive the support they need to stay engaged and succeed, everyone benefits. We see stronger academic achievement, more graduates, a more robust workforce, a more prosperous economy and thriving communities.

Let’s make being present a priority for every student.

What does it mean to be present for students?

At , it means being in schools every day, building relationships, connecting students with resources, and providing support when they need it most 💙

From academic challenges to personal obstacles, CIS site coordinators work alongside students, families, and schools to help young people feel supported and empowered.

As students head back to school, families play an important role in helping them feel supported, confident, and ready to take on new challenges 💙

From checking in about their day to staying connected with their school community, small moments of encouragement can have a lasting impact.

At , we know that every student benefits from having a strong support system around them; at school, at home, and throughout their community.

What is one way you help your student feel supported during the school year?

At the Kickoff 2026, our team gathered at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania for two days of professional development, connection, and reflection as we prepared for the year ahead!

With a Back to the Future-inspired theme, staff revisited the foundations that have guided CIS since the beginning, including the five Basics developed by CIS founder Bill Milliken. These principles continue to remind us of what every young person needs to thrive: trusted relationships, meaningful support, and someone in their corner.

We are ready for another year of showing up and making a difference across Eastern Pennsylvania!
