From our friends in Barry County.
05/20/2026

From our friends in Barry County.

We have received many questions regarding yesterday’s severe weather event. This was not a typical weather situation for our community, as severe weather events more commonly occur during the evening or overnight hours. The event caused some confusion because Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) were sent to cellular devices, but the alerts did not specifically state “Tornado Warning.” At the same time, outdoor warning sirens were activated in the affected communities.

The attached image is a list of situations in which the National Weather Service (NWS) will issue a WEA in Michigan.

The forecasted wind speeds also met our local outdoor warning siren activation criteria. This event occurred in the middle of the afternoon, during the work week, and near school dismissal times, outdoor warning sirens were an important tool for alerting people who may have been outside during rapidly changing weather conditions.

We encourage all residents to use multiple methods for receiving weather alerts, including weather radios, phone apps, Rave alerts, local media, other trusted notification systems and take action by following Emergency Alert recommendations received on their wireless devices.

Thank you to Barry County Central Dispatch and NOAA/NWS Grand Rapids for their close monitoring of the situation and their swift actions to help protect our community, including local students and school staff.
