Contracting is about a lot more than knowing how to do the work. 🏗️

You can be great at your trade and still struggle in business if you don’t learn how to win the right jobs, bid with confidence, protect your profit, manage cash flow, build systems, create a team, market yourself, and follow through.

That’s what this series is about.

These slides aren’t meant to teach you everything there is to know about running a construction company there’s a lot more to every one of these topics. But these are some of the fundamentals every contractor should understand, consider, and continue improving as their business grows.

A contractor has to learn to wear a lot of hats:

Get the opportunity.
Estimate it correctly.
Present value.
Win the job.
Protect the profit.
Manage the money.
Deliver great work.
Build relationships.
Create systems.
Develop people.
Build a reputation.
Then repeat.

And remember: getting your contractor license is not the finish line. It’s the starting line.

At Every Contractors Foundation, we want to help contractors understand not only how to become licensed, but how to think like business owners, become better leaders, and build companies that can create opportunities for themselves, their families, their employees, and their communities.

Save these slides and come back to them. Send them to another contractor who is trying to grow.

And keep following Every Contractors Foundation because we’re going to keep breaking these subjects down one by one. There is a lot more coming.

LICENSE. BUILD. LEAD. 🔵🟢
Build the business. Build the people. Build the legacy.

SPECIALTY CONTRACTOR VS. GENERAL B CONTRACTOR—WHO SHOULD YOU HIRE? 🤔

As a General B contractor, I will always do my best to hire qualified specialty contractors for each specific trade. Why? Because a specialty contractor focuses on mastering that particular type of work whether it’s flooring, painting, electrical, plumbing, roofing, or another trade.

But the right choice depends on the project:

🏠 If you’re remodeling an entire home or completing a project involving multiple trades, hiring a General B contractor makes sense. The general contractor coordinates the project, brings in the right specialists, manages the schedule, and makes sure everyone’s work comes together correctly.

🔨 If you only need one specific job completed such as flooring or painting your best option may be hiring a licensed specialty contractor who specializes in that exact trade.

It’s not about one license being better than the other. It’s about hiring the right contractor for the right project.

That’s exactly what I break down in this video from my perspective as a contractor and from the perspective of a homeowner.

📊 KNOW YOUR NUMBERS. KNOW YOUR BUSINESS.

Your financial statements are more than paperwork they tell the true story of your company.

The Balance Sheet is your company’s financial snapshot. It shows:

✅ What your business owns
✅ What your business owes
✅ What your business is worth

The Income Statement is your company’s performance report card. It tracks:

✅ Revenue coming in
✅ Expenses going out
✅ Your actual profit or loss

Think of it as your business data, statistics, and performance metrics. These numbers show whether you’re operating a profitable company—or simply staying busy without making money.

Especially when starting and growing a business, you must become familiar with these reports. You cannot make strong decisions based on assumptions or how much money is currently sitting in your bank account.

Sales do not automatically mean profit. Revenue does not tell the entire story.

If you want to build a successful business, you have to understand where your money comes from, where it goes, and what remains after every expense.

Know your numbers. Control your business. Build on a stronger foundation. 🧱

A contractor license opens the door but it is only the beginning of the journey.

Receiving your license does not automatically build your business, bring in customers, create profitable estimates, develop your team, or establish your reputation.

That is where the real work begins.

After the license comes the responsibility of building a legitimate company, creating a recognizable brand, learning your numbers, estimating correctly, marketing consistently, closing sales, serving customers, developing systems, and becoming a leader.

At Every Contractors Foundation, we are here to help you get started, but we are also here for the work that comes afterward.

We are here when you submit the application.
We are here while you prepare for the exams.
We are here when you receive your license.
And we are here as you begin building the business behind it.

Because our mission is not simply to help people become licensed contractors. Our mission is to help contractors build companies, create opportunities, support families, employ others, and leave something meaningful behind.

The license opens the door.
The business builds the legacy.
The Foundation supports the entire journey.

We don’t just build contractors. We build legacies!!!

GENERAL B vs. B-2 CONTRACTOR

🏗️ GENERAL B — THE BUILDER
Think bigger construction.

A General B contractor is built for projects involving multiple trades and larger construction scopes.

BUILD • ADD • REMODEL • MANAGE

Think:
“I want to build and manage complete construction projects.”

🔨 B-2 — THE HANDYMAN / REMODELER
Think repairs, improvements & remodeling.

The B-2 is a great fit for someone whose work is more like an experienced professional handyman or remodeler—working on existing homes and buildings rather than ground-up construction.

REPAIR • IMPROVE • UPDATE • REMODEL

Think:
“I work on existing properties and do a little bit of everything.”

THE SIMPLEST WAY TO EXPLAIN IT:

General B = BUILDER 🏗️
B-2 = HANDYMAN / REMODELER 🔨

Neither one is automatically “better.”
The right license depends on the type of work you actually do.

C-7 Low Voltage vs. C-10 Electrical Contractor

One is not better than the other they simply specialize in different systems.

🔵 C-7 Low Voltage Systems Contractor

The C-7 contractor works with communication and energy-limited systems that do not exceed 91 volts.

Examples include:

* Internet and data cabling
* Telephone systems
* Security cameras and CCTV
* Audio and sound systems
* Cable and satellite systems
* Access-control systems
* Smart-home wiring
* Temperature and instrumentation controls
* Low-voltage landscape lighting

Important: California’s C-7 classification specifically excludes low-voltage fire-alarm systems.

⚡ C-10 Electrical Contractor

The C-10 contractor works with electrical wiring and equipment that generate, transmit, transform, or use electrical energy.

Examples include:

* Electrical panels and service upgrades
* Breakers and circuits
* Outlets and switches
* Interior and exterior lighting
* Conduit and raceways
* Appliance connections
* EV-charger installations
* Solar photovoltaic systems
* Residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems

Here’s the easiest way to understand it:

C-7 connects the systems that help a building communicate, monitor, and operate intelligently.

C-10 installs the electrical infrastructure that powers the building.

The C-7 contractor may install the data cable going to a security camera. The C-10 contractor may install the circuit and outlet powering that system.

Different voltage. Different scope. Different specialization. But both contractors are essential to modern construction.

This isn’t about which license is “better.” It’s about understanding your experience, choosing the correct classification, and building a business around the work you’re qualified to perform.

C-7 Low Voltage Contractor vs. C-10 Electrical Contractor—what license are you building towards?
