Senior Services of Alexandria

Senior Services of Alexandria Fostering independence and self-sufficiency, enabling seniors within the City of Alexandria to age with dignity.

Founded in 1968, SSA strives to be the trusted, independent point of reference for Alexandria's senior citizens so they can live safe, healthy, self-sufficient lives. SSA wants seniors, their family members, and caregivers to have access to the resources needed to make informed decisions when self-sufficient living is no longer possible. To fulfill this role, the organization operates programs that provide safe and reliable low-cost transportation for seniors, as well as the mentally- and physically-impaired; nutritional meals to any homebound senior facing food insecurity; services to improve at-home quality of living and financial stability; free educational events; as well as a point of contact knowledgeable of the full range of businesses, government services, independent programs for seniors in Alexandria.

It’s been a great week at Senior Services of Alexandria!
We kicked things off with an important conversation about ACT for Alexandria’s new “Think Ahead” Legacy Campaign, led by Tricia Ritchie, Chief Development Officer at ACT for Alexandria; Gretchyn Meinken, SSA Board Chair; and Mary Lee Anderson, SSA Executive Director.
We also joined the City of Alexandria in celebrating our incredible centenarians and started this year's first session of the Senior Academy!
Throughout the week, our team continued connecting older adults with resources, activities, and opportunities across Alexandria. Wilder conducted outreach at ALIVE!, while residents at Claridge House participated in chair exercise with Goodwin Living and an educational presentation on emotional wellness with VHC Health.
Over at ALATE, residents got creative during an art class with UpCycle Creative Reuse Center. Olivia and Iris wrapped up the week with a fun flower arrangement workshop with ALATE residents!
From education and outreach to wellness, creativity, and celebration, it was another busy and rewarding week connecting with Alexandria’s older adults. 💙

This week at Senior Services of Alexandria has been another great week of connection, service, and planning for the future. We were honored to welcome Carter Florence, Vice President of Programs at Meals on Wheels America, who joined us in delivering meals. We are so grateful for her dedication to older adults and for taking the time to experience firsthand the impact of our Meals on Wheels program.

We'd also like to thank Diana for volunteering with UpCycle Creative Reuse Center to instruct Art Classes at Alate . Residents thoroughly enjoyed the activity and had a wonderful time painting beautiful flower-themed artwork. It was especially meaningful to see the smiles on their faces and hear their appreciation for the program. During the class, we also had the opportunity to get to know one of our newest residents, whom we've recently connected with. We are excited for Diana to continue leading art classes and bringing creativity and connection to our community.

This week, Marshall Hespe, our Director of Nutrition Programs, attended a Commission on Aging Executive Committee meeting, continuing SSA's commitment to staying engaged with community leaders and partners working to support older adults throughout Alexandria.

Our Outreach team also came together this week for a team meeting as we look ahead to a busy and exciting fall season. With summer coming to an end, we're looking forward to connecting with the community at upcoming events and continuing to expand our outreach efforts. We have also been hard at work planning Oktoberfest, and excitement is building for what promises to be a fantastic event. Don't forget to get your tickets. We can't wait to celebrate with you! https://e.givesmart.com/events/PN0/?isOrderFormActive=true
