50 years of service, innovation, and caring for Alexandria. This year marks a major milestone for the Alexandria Fire Department as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in its modern form. In June 1976, AFD established its EMS Division, bringing Advanced Life Support (ALS) care directly to the streets of Alexandria in partnership with physicians at Alexandria Hospital.

Specially trained medics began providing advanced medical treatment and lifesaving interventions, helping transform prehospital emergency care for our community. Over the past five decades, generations of AFD paramedics, EMTs, and firefighters have answered the call day and night, delivering compassionate, professional care when it matters most.

As we honor this anniversary, we recognize the dedication of those who built the foundation of our EMS program and those who continue that legacy today.
