September 11, 2001, remains a day etched into our nation’s history, a day marked by profound loss, extraordinary courage, and sacrifice.

Today, 25 years later, the Alexandria Fire Department honors the lives lost, remembers those who answered the call, and pays tribute to the courage and resilience that followed.

September is Firefighter Appreciation Month, and we’re proud to celebrate the dedication, skill and commitment of our team!

Our Hazardous Materials Team recently completed its annual chlorine leak training, rotating through hands-on scenarios using the Chlorine Institute Cylinder Emergency Kit “A” while wearing Level A PPE.

Training like this ensures our firefighters are ready to protect our community when hazardous materials pose a threat. We appreciate the men and women who put in the work to stay prepared, protect others and answer the call.

TRAVEL WITH CAUTION: Overnight storms have caused downed trees, electrical lines, flooded streets, and traffic signal outages in several areas. Please allow extra time for your morning commute, use caution, and be prepared for changing road conditions.

Road obstructions and flooding
Seminary Rd: Repairs to the traffic signal are expected to continue into the afternoon.
100 Wesmond Dr: Electric lines and trees are blocking the roadway.
Van Dorn St ramp to Metro Rd, southbound: Trees are blocking the roadway.

As daylight approaches, there are more reports of hazards and downed trees coming in. Please proceed with caution.

Know your PASS method for using an extinguisher:

Pull the pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Sweep from side to side

Only use an extinguisher if the fire is small, you have a clear escape route and feel comfortable doing so. When in doubt, get out and call 911.

Summer may be winding down, but there’s still time for a few safety reminders. Before your next cookout, make sure:

Grills are outdoors and away from structures.
The grill is never left unattended.
Children and pets stay away from the cooking area.
You have a hose or fire extinguisher nearby.

On August 25, 2026, the Alexandria Fire Department responded to the rear of Foxchase Shopping Center for a reported outside electrical fire.

A tractor-trailer making a delivery to Harris Teeter accidentally struck an electrical service drop, pulling the lines away from the building. The damaged, energized lines began arcing and ignited nearby combustibles, spreading the fire to multiple dumpsters, a vehicle and wooden fencing.

Fire suppression efforts were delayed approximately one hour while the power company worked to de-energize the lines.

The fire was accidental. No injuries were reported, and no buildings sustained fire damage.
