National VOAD is attending the 2026 Natural Hazards Workshop in Colorado this week. This annual gathering brings together researchers, emergency managers, nonprofit leaders, government partners, and practitioners from across the country to share knowledge, explore emerging challenges, and strengthen disaster resilience.

We're learning from innovative research, engaging in important conversations about the future of disaster management, and connecting with partners who help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Opportunities like this help strengthen the VOAD Movement and our collective ability to serve survivors when they need us most.

Have you ever noticed that the National VOAD logo is shaped like an umbrella?

That design reflects the strength of the VOAD Movement. Each branch represents the many organizations, State and Territory VOADs, partners, and volunteers who come together as one cohesive network.

Individually, each member brings unique expertise and resources. Together, they form a structure that reaches across the nation and its territories, providing support, coordination, and hope to communities before, during, and after disasters.

Like an umbrella providing shelter in a storm, the VOAD Movement helps ensure communities are not facing challenges alone.

It's inspiring to see so many organizations making a difference in communities across the country and Pacific territories. Of the 17 organizations highlighted in this VAL Snapshot, 11 are National VOAD member organizations—a testament to the strength and reach of the VOAD Movement.

Disaster response and recovery are most effective when national organizations, State and Territory VOADs, federal partners, local community groups, and countless volunteers work together toward a common mission. These partnerships help ensure communities receive the support they need before, during, and long after disasters occur.

National VOAD recently had the opportunity to visit a bridge-building project in North Carolina as part of filming for our upcoming documentary.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, families have faced immense challenges accessing their homes and rebuilding their lives. Through an inspiring partnership between Mennonite Disaster Service and Islamic Relief USA, new bridges are restoring critical access and helping communities move forward.

This project is a powerful example of what the VOAD Movement does best: bringing organizations together across backgrounds, faiths, and missions to serve survivors and strengthen communities.

Dan Christopulos was a steady and respected presence within the VOAD Movement for many years. As the member representative for International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) and a dedicated member of the National VOAD Board of Directors, Dan brought wisdom, compassion, and a deep commitment to serving communities impacted by disaster.

We are grateful for Dan's contributions, his friendship, and his legacy of service to others.

May his memory be eternal.

IOCC mourns the loss of dear friend and former IOCC staffer Dan Christopulos, who reposed in the Lord on May 30.

Dan served the Orthodox Christian Church as a priest, a missionary, and as humanitarian with IOCC for almost 19 years. Serving in various fundraising roles and as US Country Representative, Dan played a critical role in IOCC’s formative years. He went on to work at our sister organization OCMC, continuing his mission work. May his memory be eternal.

May was a busy month for National VOAD, and we were proud to spend part of it strengthening partnerships and coordination at the Florida Governor's Hurricane Conference and the Florida VOAD Annual Meeting.

As we enter June and the start of hurricane season, these conversations, connections, and collaborations become even more important. Building relationships before disasters strike helps ensure a stronger, more coordinated response when communities need it most.

Thank you to our partners across Florida and beyond who are working every day to prepare for the challenges ahead. Together, we are helping build the relationships and systems that improve outcomes for survivors and communities should a hurricane make landfall this season.

We are excited to welcome Dana Reed into leadership as National VOAD continues advancing the next stage of the VOAD movement. His leadership comes at a critical time as we work together to strengthen our network, serve disaster survivors more effectively, and build a stronger future for the whole community.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to the goals outlined in our strategic plan:
• Providing a positive, engaging, and transformative experience for current and future members
• Ensuring a sustainable path for present and future growth
• Leading the sector through advocacy, innovation, and thought leadership
• Embedding the principles of the 4 Cs throughout all that we do, reflective of the diverse communities that make the VOAD movement strong

We look forward to the work ahead and to continuing to build a collaborative, compassionate, and resilient network together.
