ANIMAL CRUELTY AWARENESS MONTH

April is widely recognized as a time to renew awareness of the issue of animal cruelty. Not just this month, but, every single month, Sheriff Carmine Marceno and the entire Lee County Sheriff's Office recognizes the necessity to protect animals.

In April 2020, Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced an initiative to combat Animal Abuse within Lee County by establishing the Lee County Sheriff's Office Animal Cruelty Task Force, which will continue focusing on educating residents on animal abuse and neglect. Sheriff Marceno has selected experienced detectives to investigate all misdemeanor and felony animal abuse cases within the county. Sheriff Marceno has zero tolerance for animal abuse and will seek justice for those that cannot speak up for themselves.

A program between PAWS Chicago and the Cook County Sheriff's Office (Official) pairs sheriff's office employees with PAWS dogs to help provide enrichment to the dogs and promote wellness amongst the employees.

A new volunteer partnership program between PAWS Chicago and the Cook County Sheriff's Office launched on Thursday.

Just before New Years, a 5-man Coast Guard team helped rescue a stranded pup who had fallen into the Detroit River.

One of the team members went back and adopted the dog, named Spirit by the shelter, "after the enduring, compassionate Spirit of Detroit."

"I was just happy I could help,” Trooper Neill with the Michigan State Police said. “You do what you can. You do your best for the public. Me and my partner we’re both dog people."

While firefighters worked to save a family’s home, two Michigan State Police Troopers helped resuscitate their dog, who was unconscious, and suffering from smoke inhalation.

Michelle is a real-life Wonder Woman - and an active member of our Animal Cruelty and Abuse Committee!

She was recently awarded the Ellen Glasgow Award for Humane Service from the Richmond SPCA for her amazing work as an animal welfare advocate.

“It really is an honor to protect animal victims and seek justice on behalf of them,” Welch said. “That is where I get my energy. Animal abusers need to be brought to justice.”

She can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound and she doesn’t wear a cape, but many people consider Michelle Welch a superhero.
