If you missed us on KALB yesterday, we were on midday talking about our newly released ALICE report and our Community Investment Grant Fund. We'll be posting more about this data next week, but you can go to our website at uwcl.org/alice to take a look at the report. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed -- our working class population that is above the federal poverty limit, but still living paycheck to paycheck. This data gets broken down by state and by parish, which is important when statewide statistics can often mask underlying regional issues.

Louisiana signed on to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 2008 to give our children the best start in life. Inspired by Dolly Parton’s own dad, who couldn’t read or write.

While our hearts are incredibly sad, we’re more inspired than ever to continue this important mission. Together, we are building a brighter future for our children.

Thank you for supporting our work and Dolly’s legacy.

In June, our President & CEO Lafe Jones reconnected with a high school friend, Anita M Mayeaux, to help coordinate flood relief efforts in Avoyelles. Last week she attended our Coffee and Conversations event, and we couldn't miss the opportunity for a reunion! Anita is now a Resource Linkage Coordinator at the Central Louisiana Human Services District, and we couldn't imagine a better fit. Life comes full circle!

In honor of Dolly Parton's passing, we want to highlight a program created by Dolly where parents can access school-age, appropriate books for their children and get one delivered a month completely free for kids from birth to 5 years old. Dolly was an avid champion for early literacy, and we want to honor her legacy and follow in her footsteps.

Of course, we couldn’t have had a great event without great decor and appetizers! Thank you so much to House of Flowers for providing gorgeous floral arrangement centerpieces for each table, and thank you to Golden Grace Designs for creating a photo op-worthy balloon arch! Spirits Food & Friends took care of our food and beverages for the night, even providing a custom, signature blue cocktail we called “The Recharge.” Every piece came together last week for a perfect campaign kickoff!

Gratitude can’t begin to describe how we feel about last night’s event. Our Community Campaign Kickoff, “The Art of Community,” sought to bring the community back together similar to how great art is made: piece by piece with every unique addition and resource. We’ll be posting more about this event and showing all the decor and details soon, but we wanted to show appreciation for our sponsors and our community for showing up and supporting first. 💛
