This Firefighter Appreciation Month, we recognize the men and women of the Alexandria Fire Department who answer the call when our community needs them.

Their work extends far beyond fighting fires. AFD personnel respond to emergencies, provide lifesaving assistance, support fire prevention efforts and serve Alexandria every day.

Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, we join communities across the nation in remembering the lives lost and honoring the courage shown by first responders, service members and citizens in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

We also remember the families whose lives were forever changed and reflect on the unity that brought our country together in the days that followed.

May the light of remembrance continue to shine. We will never forget.

The City of Alexandria is hosting the 3 on 3 in the City Basketball Tournament on Saturday, September 26th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Frank O. Hunter Gym.

The tournament is free and open to boys and girls ages 6 to 15, but space is limited and registration is required.
