Join us in celebrating 250 years of the Friendship Fire Company at the Friendship Firehouse Museum on Saturday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Located at 107 S. Alfred Street, the event is free and open to all. The celebration will feature a muster of over 15 antique, hand-drawn firefighting vehicles, including 19th-century suction engines and hose reel carriages. Visitors can explore the rich history of firefighting in Alexandria, with the Friendship Firehouse Museum open throughout the event. Come celebrate the legacy of friendship and firefighting in our community!

Join us next Wednesday, June 26, at 7 pm at the Lyceum for Catherine Weinraub’s lecture, “From Buckets to Motors: The History of the Alexandria Fire Department.” Catherine is the historian and research assistant at Ivy Hill Cemetery and is also the historian of the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association. She is the author of a booklet about the Friendship Fire Company.

For her talk, Catherine will discuss the history of firefighting efforts in Alexandria. From bucket brigades to today’s modern fire engines, the techniques and tools that firefighters use have changed a lot over the years. The lecture will delve into some of the city’s noteworthy fires and how Alexandrians fought back against the flames.

The lecture will start at 7 pm, and doors will open at 6:30. The lecture is free for members. Nonmember tickets are $5. You can renew your membership at the door. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Friendship Firehouse Festival is this Saturday! Join us on the 100 block of South Alfred Street from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. to celebrate Friendship’s 249th year. Learn about fire safety from yesterday to today plus see Alexandria Fire Department equipment up close. There will be a wide variety of community booths plus children will receive free toy Friendship firefighting helmets.
