Ensuring children have the skills to succeed in and out of school can be as simple as digging in the dirt. Research demonstrates that regular access to the outdoors, in particular green spaces, helps to improve concentration, impulse control, and hyperactivity—and to reduce the mental and emotional fatigue that dampens school performance in all children. The Hollin Meadows Partnership for Outdoor Education, an approved charity for the 2020 CFC campaign, raises funds to support the Outdoor Education Program at Hollin Meadows Elementary School, a Title I school in Alexandria. at GiveCFC.org and help us improve outcomes for Hollin Meadows students.

We want to hear from you!

Over the summer, we worked with Deloitte through their Impact Day initiative to identify fun, safe, and – with your help – successful alternatives to our traditional fundraising efforts. Virtual family game nights, car parades, online raffles, and partnerships with local businesses are just a few of the ideas we have been considering, and we would like your input. Please complete this brief survey and let us know your thoughts on events for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RM9K7V9. The survey should take less than three minutes to complete and we thank you in advance for your time.

We are thrilled to announce the Partnership is an approved charity for the 2020 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), which runs from September 21, 2020 to January 15, 2021. The CFC is the official workplace giving campaign of the federal government, allowing federal employees and retirees to pledge monetary support and volunteer time to approved charities.

If you are a federal employee, please “Show Some Love” to the Hollin Meadows Outdoor Education Program by giving to the Partnership through the CFC. To donate, visit GiveCFC.org, click on “online charity list,” and search for the Partnership by name or by its CFC designation number, #64587.

We are also still looking for volunteers to help in the garden. This is a great opportunity to keep students engaged, take a break from screens, and spend some time outside giving back to our community.

As summer comes to an end and fall is officially in the air, we wanted to reach out to our Hollin Meadows community and share our plans for the upcoming year. The world has certainly changed since the launch of the Harvest Gala last October, but the Partnership remains dedicated to providing necessa...

Thank you to our wonderful community for continuing to support the garden throughout the summer in a safe and socially distant way. Family units have been able to adopt the garden for one week at a time to make sure our grounds continue to thrive while keeping everyone healthy. We have also been fortunate enough to have two Eagle Scout projects (painted rock border and the tree bench) completed with the support of local partners.

The past two months have brought a great deal of change and challenges to our community, and like so many other organizations, the Partnership has recalibrated our approach during this unprecedented time. We miss seeing our Hollin Meadows students in the garden and working with community volunteers on Second Sundays, but we love hearing stories and seeing pictures of the many ways our students and families have been learning and playing outside. You have been busy finding earth worms, making nature mandalas, going on (safe and socially distant) hikes, learning how to ride bikes, and starting your own seedlings and gardens.
