The Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria

The Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria Parent Leadership Training Institute of Alexandria, a local nonprofit, seeks to enable parents to become leading advocates for children.

Definition of Parent Leadership:

For the PLTI, parent leadership means the capacity to interact within civic society with purpose and positive outcomes for children. The public is increasingly alienated from governance and democracy skills today. Many people do not know how society functions or how decisions are made within the public policy and budget domains. Yet, most parents are deeply concerned about the impact of school, community and the environment on their children.

Wow! If the seniors on this Titans football team graduated in 1971 at 17 or 18 years of age, that means most of the championship team would be about 69-72 years old today.

The Northern Virginia Health Foundation's preventable and early health deterioration data in the June 2023 Dying Too Soon Report indicates that just being an Alexandria resident of African descent makes us 117% less likely to reach age 75 than our white neighbors, friends, family and old HS football teammates.

The urgent Alexandria People's Assembly Call for an Alexandria African American Wellness Hub is astonishingly and tragically illustrated in these happy reunion photos.

It's time for the City of Alexandria to move with urgency to disrupt the systems that make Dying Too Soon such a predictable result for African American residents. When I say Remember the Titans is a fairytale, there is no stronger evidence than the need to MEMORIALIZE so many of the Black players from this team.

You can read our Alexandria People's Assembly Call and find links to the Dying Too Soon report here https://www.plti-alex.org/african-american-wellness-hub.html

To Overcome Fear by Charles McLaurin

“...The old ladies talking telling the stories of the years gone by; me with knees shaking mouth closed tightly so as to not let them hear the fear in my voice. I am feeling the movement of the car and the rumbling of the motor as we move on and on towards our destination, Indianola, county seat of Sunflower County. As we move past the little town of Sunflower, one of the old ladies said, "Won't be long now" At that moment my heart seemed to stop; fear, so much fear, realizing what danger could lie ahead for us especially me. A smart N***** trying to change a way of life liked by everyone; at least it seemed that way.

As I opened the door to get out, I got a feeling in my stomach that made me feel weak. Sweat started to form on my forehead, and my mouth became moist...”

Can you name a famous freedom fighter who decided to use her voice for change when SNCC workers knocked on her door in Sunflower County, Mississippi and asked if she would like to register to vote?
