Note: If you live in Old Town Alexandria, a combined sewer system historically discharged raw sewage into Alexandria's waterways during large storms. AlexRenew's once-in-a-generation environmental initiative RiverRenew is designed to capture 120 million gallons per year of combined sewage, sending it to our plant for treatment. Did you know that Moxie is named after Anammox, the bacteria that can remove harmful ammonia and nitrite from wastewater? Last week Moxie took a field trip to Hampton Roads Sanitation District, the source of the Anammox bacteria that will seed the newly upgraded facilities on our plant.
