Yesterday, teens with Volunteer Alexandria talked to operators, maintenance techs, IT professionals and engineers about what it’s like to work for AlexRenew and how they got into the industry. The wastewater industry truly has something for everyone, and we love getting the chance to share our stories!

Meet the Deep Rake System in the pumping station! This rake travels down a 160-foot shaft to remove trash and debris from combined sewage in the Waterfront Tunnel, separating it into a dumpster for disposal.

We’re just two weeks out from RiverRenew going live! Stay tuned as we introduce more components of this massive system that will prevent millions of gallons of combined sewer overflows from entering Alexandria’s waterways each year.

Good morning Alexandria! Beautiful blue skies today as crews remove the bulkhead gates that separate the Pendleton Street diversion facility from the Waterfront Tunnel. This means RiverRenew Plaza will be closed for a few days, but for good reason: we’re setting the stage for a cleaner, healthier future for our community and our waterways starting July 1, 2026.

⚠️Heads up! RiverRenew Plaza temporary closure June 15-22

The RiverRenew Plaza will be temporarily closed from June 15-June 22 as we work to bring the RiverRenew tunnel system online, making way for healthier waterways. We appreciate your patience as we wrap up work to prevent millions of gallons of combined sewage from polluting the Potomac each year.

✨Celebrating water quality wins in Alexandria ✨

Last year we completed the Hooffs Run Interceptor and riparian restoration along Hooffs Run in Alexandria. The result? Improved habitat, stabilized stream banks, and a 90% reduction in combined sewer overflows (99% once is complete!) Check out our website for more on how we help keep Alexandria’s waterways clean.
