After Hurricane Melissa, Shion saw devastation everywhere she turned.

As a social worker, she helped families who had lost their homes, cared for children in crisis, and walked alongside mothers trying to hold everything together. At the same time, she was navigating her own loss.

Through it all, The Salvation Army was there, not just with physical aid, but with something deeper.

“It was not just care packages. It was spiritual food.”

Church doors stayed open. People came to sit, pray, and find peace in the middle of uncertainty.

Shion’s story shows how healing after disaster goes beyond what we can see.

For two weeks after Hurricane Melissa, Johan Beckford had no way to reach her children.

No phone service. No power. No internet. No roads in or out of Cave Mountain, Jamaica.

As families faced impossible choices between buying food or paying for a few minutes of internet access, The Salvation Army and Red Lightning helped restore free community WiFi through a Starlink hub at the Cave Mountain Corps.

Every night, families gathered to call loved ones, send updates, and hear the voices they had been praying for.

This Mother’s Day, we honor mothers like Johan whose strength carried their families through uncertainty, fear, and survival. Because connection is more than convenience. It’s hope.
