We are celebrating our 60th year of service here at PRCS!

To highlight our accomplishments over the past 6 decades, we encourage you to explore a story walk through Meadow Glen Park from Thursday, September 3 to Sunday, September 6.

This free story walk will be a self-guided walking tour through the park with signs highlighting all of the great things that we have done over the past 60 years.

Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) will proudly celebrate the department’s 60th anniversary beginning in September. Since 1966, PRCS has helped connect communities and support health and wellness by providing a variety of high-quality programs and well-maintained facilities. PRCS will mark this milestone with special events and activities for everyone to enjoy.

The anniversary festivities begin at Kids Fest on Monday, September 7, 2026, and continue with a variety of events at locations throughout the county. Highlights of the anniversary celebrations include a fall kickball kickoff, a family dance party, a movie on the lawn, and a historical story trail featuring six decades of PRCS history. For more information and to explore all “Celebrate 60” programs, visit PRCS Connect at https://bit.ly/PRCS60th.

“We’ve grown from offering a few sports-related programs to providing thousands of programs annually,” said Director of Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services Steve Torpy. “Today, our department has become a true community hub that provides essential services, builds connections, promotes wellness and enhances the quality of life for everyone in Loudoun County.”

In June 1966, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted to establish the Department of Parks and Recreation. The department started with a single director position and a resident volunteer from each district appointed to the Parks and Recreation Board (now the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Board).

Initially, the department offered a Summer Playground Program for children, sports programs at high school athletic fields, and after-school recreational programs in elementary schools. In 1997, Community Services was added to the department’s name when the Loudoun County Area Agency on Aging and the then-Office on Youth Services merged with the department to better coordinate services.

Today, Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services maintains over 4,000 acres, more than 65 miles of trails, over 130 athletic fields, 26 playgrounds, and operates three recreation centers, seven community centers, five senior centers, three adult day centers, two outdoor swimming pools, and four historic heritage sites, as well as visitor and nature centers, a performing and visual arts center, a special events venue and administrative offices.

Loudoun County PRCS is a nationally accredited department and first received accreditation in 2021 from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). PRCS is one of only 15 agencies to obtain this accreditation in Virginia and nationwide, fewer than two percent of all park and recreation agencies receive CAPRA accreditation.

More information about PRCS programs and services may be found at loudoun.gov/PRCS.
