As warmer weather arrives, the Alcoa Police Department has seen an increase in complaints involving electric dirt bikes and similar off-road electric motorcycles being operated by youth and adults on public streets and paved greenway trails. We will be on the lookout this summer to enforce these laws.

For everyone’s safety, we want to clarify Tennessee law regarding these vehicles.
Under Tennessee law, many electric dirt bikes are considered “off-highway motor vehicles” because they are designed primarily for off-road use. Tennessee Code Annotated prohibits off-highway motor vehicles from being operated on public roads except under very limited circumstances.

In addition, many of these electric dirt bikes do NOT meet Tennessee’s legal definition of an electric bicycle because they:
• exceed the 750-watt limit
• can travel at speeds beyond lawful e-bike classifications
• do not have operable pedals
• are manufactured as off-road motorcycles rather than bicycles

As a result, many popular electric dirt bikes are not lawful for operation on:
• municipal streets
• sidewalks
• paved greenway trails
• bicycle/pedestrian paths

These laws exist for safety reasons. Riders on these vehicles are at significant risk of serious injury in vehicle crashes, and pedestrians on greenways can also be injured by high-speed electric motorcycles operating in shared-use areas.

Parents are strongly encouraged to closely supervise where these vehicles are ridden and ensure they are operated only in areas where their use is lawful and safe. City streets, sidewalks, parks, and paved greenway trails are prohibited areas. Our goal is education and accident prevention so that everyone can safely enjoy our roadways, parks, and greenway trail systems.

Hands free doesn’t mean mind-free. Set boundaries with your phone before the drive starts.

Too many notifications? Activate “Do Not Disturb” mode to keep your focus on the road. If you have a front seat passenger, let them handle the music and navigation, otherwise pull over if phone use becomes necessary.

Join a Department That Invests in Its Officers and Its Community

Are you looking for a law enforcement career where teamwork, training, work-life balance, and proactive policing still matter?

Our patrol division is built around a modern team-based approach designed to support officer wellness, operational effectiveness, and professional development.

What Makes Our Patrol Division Different?

Permanent Squad Assignments
Officers are assigned to permanent squads. This builds strong teamwork, trust, communication, and leadership consistency. You are not just filling a shift — you become part of a team that trains, works, and succeeds together.

Officer-Friendly 10-Hour Schedule

Our patrol division operates on a 4-days-on / 3-days-off schedule with rotating long weekends built into the calendar.

Officers enjoy:
-Predictable schedules
-Improved work-life balance
-Long weekends every rotation cycle
-Reduced burnout compared to many traditional schedules

Built-In Weekly Training Time

Unlike agencies that struggle to provide consistent training opportunities, our department dedicates Thursdays to professional development while maintaining patrol operations.

This allows officers to receive:
-Ongoing training
-Legal updates
-Tactics instruction
-Professional skill development
-Team training alongside your squad members

We believe training is not something that happens once at the academy — it is part of being a career professional.

On-Duty Physical Fitness Time

Officer wellness and fitness are essential to long-term success and safety in law enforcement. That is why officers are provided 60 minutes of on-duty physical fitness time during each scheduled workday.

Personnel have access to a fully equipped safety building gym where they can focus on:
-Cardio conditioning
-Strength training
-Tactics instruction
-Overall health and wellness
-Team training alongside your squad members

This allows officers to maintain job-ready fitness standards without sacrificing valuable family time or spending money on outside gym memberships.

Strong Patrol Support Structure

Each patrol squad consists of:
-One patrol sergeant
-Four patrol officers

Officers work overlapping patrol zones that encourage teamwork, quick backup response, and proactive policing rather than isolated “single-officer” operations and reactive policing.

Proactive and Community-Focused Policing

Our patrol officers are encouraged to be proactive, visible, and engaged with the community while supported by supervisors and specialized resources.

Patrol responsibilities include:
-Calls for service
-Traffic enforcement
-Crash investigations
-Community engagement
-Problem-oriented policing

Why Officers Choose Our Department

We understand that recruitment and retention start with treating officers like professionals.

Our agency prioritizes:
-Team cohesion
-Predictable scheduling
-Ongoing training
-Officer safety
-Career development
-Strong, positive leadership support

If you are looking for a department where you want to build a long-term career while maintaining a healthy balance between work and family life, we invite you to apply with the Alcoa Police Department.

Serve with professionalism. Train with purpose. Work with a team that has your back.
