According to futurist magazine Metropolis, shade is America’s most overlooked infrastructure. The shade structure shown here is in the West Mesa Community Planning Area (CPA) on the site of the Petroglyph National Monument. Urban planner and climate policymaker Daphne Lundi writes in Metropolis: “Today, most Americans experience summer as a leapfrog between private, air-conditioned spaces: house, car, office, mall… [it makes us] socially disconnected. By contrast, shade in the public realm is collective, restorative… life-saving.” The shade infrastructure at the Petroglyph National Monument is a respite from high temperatures, providing the restorative space Lundi references within an awe-inspiring outdoor expanse.

In a 2013 interview, accomplished New Mexican tennis player Tim Garcia reflected on the end of his athletic career: “Do all that you reasonably can to give back.” The Aztec Park tennis courts in the Foothills Community Planning Area (CPA), pictured, are a great community resource to establish a lifetime habit of athleticism. You can ‘give back’ as Garcia suggests by providing feedback on the Foothills CPA by following this link: https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/6f0f01a82b43455c8d8060b061f4e0b3?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAcGRvZgJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA85MzY2MTk3NDMzOTI0NTkAAaev8RF7Uqy8h1o5IecZTfIF65Lu8aDuOJkTyYbtFQxUiCLp2Tdkw2vKdyekxQ_aem_j5Tcw3Na3NdI1EuI0l9HZw

The Northwest Mesa Community Planning Area (CPA) has some of the most distinguished landscapes in the city. Multipurpose trails and other outdoor spaces within the CPA invite casual explorers and seasoned hikers alike to connect with the natural environment. Famous American conservationist Aldo Leopold is known for popularizing the idea of ecological thinking, a belief that every part of the natural environment creates a “community of life”. Leopold had a long tenure in New Mexico as the supervisor of Carson National Forest. “When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect,” Leopold wrote. The Northwest Mesa CPA’s abundance of outdoor recreation provides a strong foundation for Burqueño ecological thinking.
