SUCCESS STORY ~ A Safe Place to Begin Again

When Liz* came to S.A.F.E. House, she was escaping domestic violence with nowhere else to turn. Her abuser had isolated her in a remote area of New Mexico, far from family, friends, or anyone she could call on for help. She had no healthy support system and very few resources of her own.

Her opportunity to escape finally came when it was time to give birth.

While at the hospital, Liz found the courage to tell someone what had been happening at home. That disclosure opened the door to safety, and Liz entered the S.A.F.E. House emergency shelter.

But her journey was only beginning.

Liz’s newborn was experiencing serious health issues and had to remain in the hospital. While coping with the fear and uncertainty surrounding her baby’s health, Liz was also beginning the difficult work of rebuilding a life after abuse. She traveled back and forth to the hospital several times each day while working with S.A.F.E. House staff to begin creating a safe and stable future for herself and her child.

With support from case management, counseling, and shelter staff, Liz obtained the vital documents and resources she needed to move forward. She secured housing, connected with longer-term support services, and, little by little, began rebuilding the confidence and independence that years of abuse and isolation had taken from her.

Then came the moment she had been working toward: Liz’s baby was healthy enough to leave the hospital.

This time, they weren’t returning to the isolation and abuse Liz had escaped. Mother and child went home together to a safe place of their own.

Liz entered S.A.F.E. House without a support system and uncertain of what came next. She left with a home, ongoing support, renewed confidence, and the opportunity to build a safer future for herself and her child.
