Community does not happen by accident. It takes people willing to show up, listen, and look out for one another. That is what ORCA has built here in Albuquerque, and we are grateful for every person who is part of it.

But community only holds together when we look after every generation within it. Many LGBTQ+ seniors face isolation that younger generations rarely see. Family estrangement, the loss of chosen family, and a lack of affirming spaces can leave older adults in our community feeling invisible. ORCA ABQ works to change that through outreach and education across New Mexico.

This is where you come in. Showing up looks different for everyone. It might mean sharing this post, checking in on an elder in your life, or making a donation. A gift of any size moves this work forward and tells our LGBTQ+ seniors that they are seen, valued, and part of this community for good.

ORCA's roots go back to 2013, when we began as SAGE Albuquerque, a local affiliate of the SAGE National Organization. In 2022, we adopted our current name, the Older Rainbow Community of Albuquerque, and became a local partner of the newly organized SAGECollab. We remain affiliated with SAGE-USA today. orcaabq.org

A common misconception about community groups is that they are purely social. pamm meyers's recent discussion with Gordon from ORCA ABQ revealed a much deeper level of support. Beyond potlucks and conversational meetups, Orca provides:

๐Ÿ‹ A dedicated women's group that organizes outings.
๐Ÿ‹ Theater trips for members interested in the arts.
๐Ÿ‹ A discussion group for caregivers supporting people with dementiaโ€”a critical resource for a significant and often overlooked challenge.

This multi-faceted approach shows a commitment to meeting the varied needs of its members, from social engagement to essential emotional support.
