Today, April 9th, we mark Bataan Remembrance Day in New Mexico, and we will never forget.
Eighty-four years ago, members of our own 200th and 515th Coast Artillery Regiments of the New Mexico National Guard stood alongside more than 75,000 Allied service members in the Philippines. Outnumbered, outgunned, and deprived of essential supplies, they fought with extraordinary courage and resolve. What followed was unimaginable. By the time Japan surrendered in 1945, fewer than half of the 1,800 New Mexicans who served in those regiments had survived.
Today and every day, we honor the Defenders of Bataan. Their courage is among the most heroic chapters in New Mexico's history.
