Our shuttle program is looking for a few more drivers! We will be hosting a volunteer training to get you started in this fun volunteer opportunity on Saturday, June 13th at the visitor center. RSVP to the volunteer training by sending an e-mail to Ranger Dakota at: [email protected]
Shuttle drivers pilot our open-air electric shuttle and give tours of Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge, helping visitors understand what kinds of plants and animals live here in the middle Rio Grande valley and how the refuge is working to improve their habitats. After training, volunteers sign up for 1-2 shifts per month on Fridays or Saturdays. Shuttle volunteer shifts are from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Shuttle volunteers must have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old.

The library here at the visitor center has books for all ages to inspire you to learn about communities, both human and animal! Thanks to our intern Elizabeth for these highlights:
There There by Tommy Orange follows several Native American characters in Oakland whose lives connect as they head to a powwow. Each person struggles with identity, trauma, and what it means to be Native in a modern urban setting.

The Hike by Allison Farrell follows three girls as they set out on an outdoor adventure together. Along the way, they observe nature, face small challenges, and learn to appreciate the world around them. The story highlights curiosity, friendship, and the joy of exploring outside

Toxic Communities by Dorceta Taylor examines how pollution and hazardous waste are placed in low-income communities (specifically communities of color) in the United States. It argues that environmental inequality is shaped by systems and political decisions rather than being random.

Stellaluna by Janell Cannon is about a young fruit bat who is separated from her mother and raised by birds. She learns to act like them and stays awake during the day, even though it feels unnatural to her. Eventually, she reunites with her mother and discovers a new side of herself

Photo descriptions: Photos feature images of bookshelves, with images of the books' covers and photos of the authors beside the summaries featured in this post.
