From YES Housing, Inc.’s Imperial Building in Downtown Albuquerque, NM, James Landry from Mission ABQ reports from the rooftop community garden. Our summer season is thriving. We are pleased to welcome back Faila and Brennan as Mission ABQ interns, who have jumped right in to help our gardens flourish.

We have successfully harvested all of our Cabbage bekanah, a fast-growing and heat-tolerant mustard, also known as Chinese cabbage. The total weight from our 4'x10' garden bed was an impressive 40 lbs.

Additionally, our onions, a short day variety called Texas Candy, are sizing up nicely. These should be ready for harvest in early July and are expected to be quite large.

Thank you to James, everyone at Mission ABQ, and all of our resident volunteers that have been putting the work in on our community gardens!

Two years ago we set about creating the community of Calle Cuarta. We envisioned a mixed use development that included retail, live / work, affordable housing, and townhomes. we collaborated with New Mexico Dept. of Workforce Solutions, Dekker, Pavilion Construction, Albuquerque Community Foundation, Wells Fargo, Housing New Mexico, Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, and Albuquerque Housing Authority. We’ve come a long way over the last few years and we’re not done!

From YES Housing, Inc.’s Imperial Building, James Landry of Mission ABQ shares insights on this year's early harvest. The warm weather has posed challenges, but it may lead to the earliest tomato yield yet. These tomatoes were grown from seed rather than being transplanted, and they are already setting fruit.

Garlic scapes are also appearing earlier than usual. As the flower stalk of hard neck garlic, garlic scapes are cut off to allow the plant to focus its energy on growing larger bulbs. This early harvest is not only delicious sautéed but can be used in any dish that calls for garlic cloves.

Additionally, we are seeing a plentiful supply of snap peas, perfect for fresh eating or adding to stir fry.

Radishes are being harvested in abundance, providing a crisp, spicy addition to salads or tacos. Interestingly, radishes can also be roasted like carrots and potatoes, and their greens are edible too. They are best steamed or sautéed but can also be enjoyed raw in salads.

As usual, thank you to James, Mission ABQ, and all of our residents who put so much of their love into the community garden.

James Landry of Mission ABQ took a trip to Sunset Hills, YES Housing, Inc.’s development in Gallup, NM, to assist Service Coordinator, Arlene Brown with setting up some hoops on their community garden beds. This would keep pests like cats and birds from getting into the gardens.
Several residents joined them to help install the hoops. They also began planting seeds for lettuce, radishes, and squash just to name a few.
Thank you to James, Arlene, and all of our amazing residents for their work on the garden. We will post more photos as the garden progresses and the seeds sprout.

Yesterday, leadership from YES and YDI met to continue coordinating the development of the STEM-based early childhood center alongside our 272-unit affordable housing community at West Mesa Ridge, a new development to be located at Coors and Fortuna in Albuquerque, NM.

Together, we have already secured enough resources to create a community where affordable housing, education, and family support systems are intentionally connected.

This partnership goes beyond buildings. It is about creating opportunity for families in one place — housing, childcare, early learning, and community working together as one ecosystem. Jeebs & Zuzu is acting as architect on the development while Chelsea Investment Corporation, New Mexico Dept. of Workforce Solutions, Bernalillo County NM, Albuquerque Housing Authority, and Housing New Mexico all providing resources.
