Changing Spaces NM

Changing Spaces NM Welcome to Changing Spaces New Mexico! We are advocating for more accessible bathrooms with adult changing tables across New Mexico.

Our chapter just started in 2024, but we are part of a national network of advocates bringing awareness about the need for adjustable-height universal changing tables in public family restrooms. Join us and share your story!

Accessibility is taking off at the Albuquerque International Sunport! ✈️♿

Changing Spaces NM is excited to celebrate the installation of TWO new universal, height-adjustable changing tables at the Sunport. These are only the second and third adult-sized changing tables that we know of in New Mexico — an important step forward, but also a reminder of how much work remains.

For children and adults with disabilities who cannot use a traditional changing table, access to this equipment can make the difference between being changed safely and with dignity or being changed on a public restroom floor. Without an appropriate place to provide personal care, some people may have no option but to remain in soiled clothing until they can get home.

That affects not only people with disabilities, but also their parents, caregivers and families — and can determine whether they are able to comfortably travel, attend events or spend a day in the community.

The Sunport's new accessible family restrooms include both height-adjustable changing tables and sinks. One is located upstairs before security, and the other is across from Gate A1.

We are grateful to the City of Albuquerque and the Albuquerque International Sunport for recognizing that accessible restrooms need to work for people of ALL ages and abilities. Funding from the New Mexico Tourism Department helped make these improvements possible, creating a more welcoming airport for residents and visitors alike. We were proud to be part of that effort to get funding set aside for this work and happy to see these rooms become a reality.

Changing Spaces NM will continue advocating for universal changing tables in public spaces across our state. Two more tables may sound like a small step, but for the families who need them, each new location can open up a whole lot more of New Mexico. Thank you to everyone who helped make these installations possible!

A mobile changing station is going to be a game changer for New Mexico families. Imagine families who include someone with a disability having an easier time attending fiestas and fairs! 🎉

We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the NM Legislators who have provided Adelante with $275,000 to fully fund a mobile universal restroom/changing station to support people with disabilities and seniors! ♿🚻

The trailer will be equipped with a powered, height-adjustable universal changing table, supporting NM residents and tourists alike at events across New Mexico.

Currently, once someone outgrows an infant changing table, caregivers and family members have to resort to changing them on the bathroom floor or in a vehicle. This mobile station will provide much needed safe and dignified restroom access.

Thank you to State Representative Elizabeth Thomson, Representative Eleanor Chávez, Representative Marian Matthews, Representative Joy Garratt 4 New Mexico, Representative Kathleen Cates Vote For Kathleen 2024, Senator Martin Hickey, State Senator Nicole Tobiassen, and Senator Craig Brandt for supporting Adelante and our efforts to move New Mexico forward into a more accessible future!

Do you know of an eligible public facility (government/tribal/municipal/nonprofit w/ fiscal agent) that would be a great fit for an adult changing table? The New Mexico Department of Tourism is administering a grant to cover costs of purchase and install! Let us know and we can share the link to apply.

The New Mexico Tourism Department is now accepting applications to fund powered, height-adjustable universal changing station tables at qualified facilities across New Mexico. In partnership with Destination Accessibility and Changing Spaces New Mexico, this pilot grant supports more accessible public restrooms, making travel easier for people with disabilities and their caregivers.

Come thank Explora with us! We want to encourage more organizations to install universal changing tables!

This mother’s story is all too common for a parent of a special needs child. That's why we are advocating for universal changing stations in New Mexico.

We appreciate Tomasita for sharing this story with us. Have you and your family been impacted by this issue? Join the effort and share your story, too!
