Changing Spaces NM

Changing Spaces NM Welcome to Changing Spaces New Mexico! We are advocating for more accessible bathrooms with adult changing tables across New Mexico.

Our chapter just started in 2024, but we are part of a national network of advocates bringing awareness about the need for adjustable-height universal changing tables in public family restrooms. Join us and share your story!

A mobile changing station is going to be a game changer for New Mexico families. Imagine families who include someone with a disability having an easier time attending fiestas and fairs! 🎉

We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the NM Legislators who have provided Adelante with $275,000 to fully fund a mobile universal restroom/changing station to support people with disabilities and seniors! ♿🚻

The trailer will be equipped with a powered, height-adjustable universal changing table, supporting NM residents and tourists alike at events across New Mexico.

Currently, once someone outgrows an infant changing table, caregivers and family members have to resort to changing them on the bathroom floor or in a vehicle. This mobile station will provide much needed safe and dignified restroom access.

Thank you to State Representative Elizabeth Thomson, Representative Eleanor Chávez, Representative Marian Matthews, Representative Joy Garratt 4 New Mexico, Representative Kathleen Cates Vote For Kathleen 2024, Senator Martin Hickey, State Senator Nicole Tobiassen, and Senator Craig Brandt for supporting Adelante and our efforts to move New Mexico forward into a more accessible future!

Do you know of an eligible public facility (government/tribal/municipal/nonprofit w/ fiscal agent) that would be a great fit for an adult changing table? The New Mexico Department of Tourism is administering a grant to cover costs of purchase and install! Let us know and we can share the link to apply.

The New Mexico Tourism Department is now accepting applications to fund powered, height-adjustable universal changing station tables at qualified facilities across New Mexico. In partnership with Destination Accessibility and Changing Spaces New Mexico, this pilot grant supports more accessible public restrooms, making travel easier for people with disabilities and their caregivers.

Come thank Explora with us! We want to encourage more organizations to install universal changing tables!

This mother’s story is all too common for a parent of a special needs child. That's why we are advocating for universal changing stations in New Mexico.

We appreciate Tomasita for sharing this story with us. Have you and your family been impacted by this issue? Join the effort and share your story, too!

Self-advocates, parents, guardians and disability supporters: Thank you for your interest in supporting HB40 which calls for installation of universal, adult, adjustable height changing stations in New Mexico. The legislation is being heard at the New Mexico Legislature this year and our first committee hearing our bill is this Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 9 am in Room 307 of the Roundhouse, as HB40 will be heard by the House Health & Human Services Committee. If you can attend in person, please do!

Remember to allow extra time to arrive in Santa Fe, to park and to find the committee room. Every committee matters along this journey and we need to show community support for HB40. It is unclear from the agenda how much time there will be for public comment, but they do often ask for a show of hands on who is there in favor of certain bills and the more hands that go up the better. We are one of 10 bills slated for discussion during the meeting, but the exact order may be subject to change.

If you cannot make it in person, you can still help by calling or emailing the committee members. Reach out to us if you want to get involved by completing the form on https://goadelante.org/changing-spaces-advocacy/. We are happy to send you a contact list of the legislators to contact.

You can also watch the meeting on Zoom. Committee chairs and time limitations may dictate your ability to provide comment virtually.
