Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue station 34 crews responded to two separate outside fires today.

The first incident occurred on the Pajarito Mesa and involved a trash pile that had caught fire.

The second incident was reported off Markham Road SW, where reported welding activity sparked a brush fire that spread into nearby trees. Resources on scene included Tender 34, Engine 34, and Battalion 8, who worked to contain and extinguish the fire.

These calls serve as a reminder of how quickly fire can spread in dry conditions. Please continue to use caution with any activities that could spark a fire.

Today, BernCo Fire & Rescue, alongside County Commissioner Eric Olivas (D5), welcomed four new fire engines into service with traditional push‑in ceremonies at its East Mountain Stations.

The new engines double BCFR’s water capacity with 1,000 gallons onboard and feature a safer top‑mount pump panel for engineers.

Funded through Bernalillo County public safety tax dollars and a New Mexico Fire Protection grant secured by the Village of Tijeras, these engines represent strong state‑local partnership.

🚫🔥Open Burning Ban Now in Effect for Unincorporated Bernalillo County

The Bernalillo County Board of County Commissioners has approved a ban on all open burning in unincorporated areas of the county, outside Albuquerque city limits, due to increasing wildfire danger.

The ban prohibits all open burning, including campfires and vegetation fires. Smoking is only permitted inside enclosed buildings or vehicles equipped with ashtrays.

With dry conditions and elevated fire risk across the region, this measure is intended to help protect lives, property, and our natural resources from wildfire.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping keep our community safe. Please do your part to prevent wildfires and stay informed about current fire restrictions.

Happening Today: BernCo Fire & Rescue is celebrating the arrival of four new engines at its East Mountains fire stations with push-in ceremonies. The tradition dates to the late 1800s, when crews pushed horse‑drawn wagons back into the station after calls. Today, this symbolic ceremony continues as firefighters push the new trucks into the bays by hand, welcoming them into service.

Members from Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue recently participated in specialized water rescue training to strengthen our response capabilities during flash flood and swift water incidents throughout Albuquerque and the surrounding areas.

This valuable training focused not only on water rescue operations, but also on critical search techniques, including coordinated grid pattern searches used to locate missing victims efficiently and safely.

With New Mexico’s unpredictable weather and rapid flooding events, continued training ensures our crews remain prepared to protect the community when seconds matter most.

Strong work to all members who continue to invest time and effort into sharpening these lifesaving skills.

This Memorial Day, Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue’s Wildland Team attended the New Mexico Fallen Wildland Firefighters Commemoration Ceremony at Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, NM.

During the ceremony, the names of fallen wildland firefighters were read aloud, followed by a moment of silence and a bell ringing in their honor. BCFR’s Wildland Team was once again honored to read the names of our fallen Bernalillo County Metro 2 heroes.

We remember and honor their sacrifice.
