Southwest Llama Rescue, Inc. (SWLR)

Southwest Llama Rescue, Inc. (SWLR) SWLR is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit llama and alpaca rescue with adoption coordinators and foster farms in the western U.S. Some males are gelded.

from Texas and Oklahoma to California. SWLR is funded by private donations and adoption fees. When llamas or alpacas come into the care of Southwest Llama Rescue, Inc. (SWLR), they are health-checked, vaccinated, wormed, sheared and toenails trimmed. The llamas or alpacas then go to one of our SWLR foster farms, where they are prepared for adoption into pre-screened homes. All SWLR llamas and alpa

cas are placed with non-breeding contracts. If at any time the adopters can no longer care for an SWLR animal, they must return the animal to SWLR. Prior to placement, adopters must meet farm requirements and submit adoption forms. A facility check will be done by a SWLR member volunteer. There is an adoption fee for any SWLR animal. Please check the website for current fees. Llamas or alpacas are to be picked up at foster facilities. Though we at SWLR hope you will consider fostering or adopting one of our rescues, we also have llamas and alpacas that, for whatever reasons, will not be adopted, but will instead be cared for at our rescue foster farms. We need people willing to "sponsor" these llamas or alpacas by donating financially for their day-to-day care.

Southwest Llama Rescue won't have a sanctuary in Kerrville but will have llamas at other locations. Llamas went to other foster farms. Equipment is being moved from the Kerrville sanctuary to other foster farms in the New Mexico, Colorado and Texas locations. We continue to be blessed with volunteers to help with the equipment moving and sorting and cleanup. These old geldings will be getting some pasture at their new foster farm.

Celebrate the holidays with a llama!

One of our SWLR adopters has a 14-year old alpaca who went down yesterday with clear signs of heat stress. I've related everything I know and have learned, but we're at a critical point: though eating and drinking, pooping and... peeing status tbd, she's been down for almost 24 hours.

Thus far: moved to barn, in shade, under a fan with belly and ground around her wetted; banamine, B-complex, electrolytes in her water; her herd companions nearby. Temp back down to normal ranges, respirations holding at 35/minute.

Your thoughts? Shared experience, suggestions, healing juju... all beneficial feedback implored!

Nick and his sidekick came to shear Friday. Preacher jumped at least 4 fences to escape the ranch and go exploring while they sheared the other six. I can’t explain what a great job Nick did.

They are living in the north 20 of the pasture and my other 8 are living in the south 20. They watch each other and everyone but Llano stays away from me.

Loretta, the 3 legged wonder llama went over the rainbow bridge. She was loved by many. She rewarded with attitude. This is a picture when she first arrived with us in October 2022. Etheridge Farm Fosters loved and cared for her thru many a prosthetic size change. Thanks to Allee & Carl plus Chris & Megan of My Pets Brace-Texas, Loretta had the best life possible.

Untrained llamas that have never been handled or sheared require special handling to be sheared. The professionals' talents are amazing to remove matted, full of debris, wool from frightened llamas.

Lloretta turns 2 years old. Feisty as ever!

Lloretta turns 2 years old. Feisty as ever!

Today is an important day. Today, Lloretta turns two years old! Everyone, please don your protective face shields and wish Llollo a HAPPY EFFING BIRTHDAY!!!

Now that she's two, she should be just about fully grown. She's outgrown her current prosthetic, so on Thursday, Chris of My Pets Brace Texas came out to the farm to get a cast of Llollo's stump so he can start work on what should be the last brace she needs for several years! If Lloretta hates anyone more than she hates me, it's Chris, so he always has an adventure when he has to work on her.

As a reminder, these prosthetics are extraordinarily expensive. Southwest Llama Rescue, Inc. (SWLR) has sent Chris the down payment on this new one, which allowed him to start work and get the cast, but SWLR needs to raise quite a bit more money before the new prosthetic can be delivered. I've posted a blink for fun grazing below.

Lloretta's second birthday is also a momentous occasion because it means that Carl and I can start the process of officially adopting her! For the past year, she's just been our foster-to-adopt baby. Now that she's about to get her last prosthetic, though, SWLR is ready to sign off and make Lloretta an Etheridge forever. ♥️♥️♥️

The past year with Llollo has been a learning experience for sure, and she's definitely a brat who hates me, but I cannot possibly express how much I love her spitty face. She's truly my soulhate! She's the one for me! I am so proud to say that I am her mom. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
